I love Varget
« on: August 26, 2010, 05:40:14 AM »
I love it for my .233's and a 22-250 anyway. I bought a bull barreled G2 Contender a couple of years ago in .223 and started working up loads for it using a few different powders. I wasn't having any results that really thrilled me and decided to try some Varget. The very first trip to the range I had very good results finding a load that shot very good groups, the smallest a .289" and the largest slightly over .4". Couldn't hardly believe it so I tried the same load in my grandkid gun, a Stevens 200. It shot groups in the .6"-.8" range.

I had quit shooting my 22-250 because it makes my arthritic shoulder ache but since the coyotes have become educated from so much hunting pressure I decided I needed something that would reach out out farther than the .223, achy shoulder or not. The 22-250 is a Ruger #1 and has always been a barely minute of angle shooter. My first range session with loads using Varget were ho-hum to but I still had hopes. I continued working with it and have found 2 loads that gave less than half minute of angle results at 100 yards. Later today I am going to sight it in at 200 yards and then see if we can get a coyote in this weekend. I'm heading to the range right now.

I've had good luck with Varget in my 223's, 308, and light bullets in my 243's.

I too tried Varget and loved it for my .204 Ruger, ran out and couldn't find any around here any where. Picked up some RL-15 and I think its alittle better then Varget but, both have given my very tight groups.

I have found Varget to be a go to powder now. I can shoot some one hole groups with my Remington 700 SPS Varmint 22-250 and I have also found that my 6.5x55 Swede likes it also.  Here a a few groups from my 22-250. Yes I like Varget. ;D Take care Dale

So what do you think? Does my rifle also love Varget? Dale

I had to wipe the powder burns from the targets!!!!!! No really these were shot at 100 yards. This rifle will shoot a couple good groups like the ones I posted when I go to the range. Those little orange targets on my home made ones measure 1". Not every group is like that for sure. It does shoot about a 1/2'' at 100 yards normally. I just enjoy it very much when they go in one hole. :o :o ;D ;D Take care Dale
