« on: June 12, 2010, 09:17:16 AM »
do you buy commercial cleaning patches or do you cut your own ? just bought hoppe'd patches pack of 50 $1.49 + 9 % tax been looking at the cost of patches.  i think i can buy fine silk from the orient cheaper than patches . so any one buy there own cloth by the yard and cut your own or use old T shirts ?

The wife is a quilting nut. I have her save flannel that I can use. She has a rotary cutter and straight edges and can whip out a hundred in a few minutes time. The cheaper flannels are usually the right thickness, a yard of W*M flannel is about $3.99  54" x 36" is a bunch of patches.  I'll be honest I hate t-shirt 's for patches they make a good enough rag but not so much for patches.

I have put dirty patches in a cloth bag and wash them and use them over and over until they wear out.  I've bought patches, but use the old underwear for the real dirty cleaning first.

My wife will discard a pair of her cotton panties from time to time and I have found that material to be excellent patch material. I'm just careful not to have a pair out while cleaning when some of my friends drop by.  ;D

T-shirts, old sheets and flannel sewing scraps.  I just added a bunch of cotton T-Shirts to the rag bucket.

E.Q., Yea, I know how the younger females of our species can be. I have helped raise two step-daughters and a granddaughter buy myself. They can be a challenge.

I make do with whats at hand, if I have patches I use them or whats handy.
I had thought I had a squeeky clean bore but it still had copper fouling streaks that could be seen at the muzzle so I made a temporary home made electro bore cleaner from a D-cell flash light, steel rod, electrical tape, rubber plug, ammonia cleaner, couple lengths of old speaker wire.
All sorts of nasty brownish/black froth boiled out the muzzle, the steel rod was throughly coated with the nasty slime.

It dident tighten the groups that much but the bore allot cleaner in ther now.

I use the blue paper towels like  they sell in the auto parts stores. They hold up to jags with a tight enough fit for me. It doesn't take long to cut enough of the right size for a cleaning session. Not my idea, I read it on another forum and gave it a try.

I just cut old t shirts up when I am bored and watching tv. I bought a big pack of them about a year ago and that is all they were made of so I figured what the heck I will just cut my own. Dale
