Need rust removal help with my CVA Optima Pro
« on: August 01, 2010, 09:18:33 AM »
I have been a long time lurker in the H&R rooms for a long time and think this is a great Forum.

Here's what happened,

I have a blued Optima Pro and last time I shot it was last year sighting in the scope. I guess I didn't do a well enough job of cleaning it. My issue isnt in the barrel, but in the area where the 209 goes and under the barrel within the forward stock. I was told the 209 will be as corrosive. So with the rust and mess I did my best to clean off, I had to resort to my Dremel with the wire wheel. It did a perfect job in the barrel before the threads of the breech plug. I also used it under the barrel and around the receiver where it pivots once its open.

The rust did leave a little pitting in a few spots, but what should I do next to protect it? right now I coated it with bore butter.

I dont think its ruined, but I learned for the next time after the season and or after shooting to take apart the whole thing and do a better thorough cleaning.

Thanks

bore butter is garbage for rust protection.

If you want something that will TRULY protect against rust and be able to clean the crud off with a simple wipe down i will highly recommend Ultra Gun Shield. Its a little expensive, under $30 for a bottle that can finish 4 to 6 guns but the stuff WORKS.

I put this little clip together with before and after pictures.

Im doing all of my rifles with the stuff right as i type this.

bigblock,

Thanks for the post.  I've done a fair amount of ML shooting over the past 10 years (probably 40 or 50 range sessions), and I generally just hose my TC barrels off in the shower, running a mildly soapy patch with a cleaning rod.   Super hot water followed by a little compressor blow on the locking lug spring area and then some CorrosionX (great product) keeps things nice and shiny.  I do use natural lube (lots) inside the barrel for storage, and it seems to work pretty well.

But, I've always been looking for just such a product that you just posted.  Man, that looks like a great discovery.  THANK YOU.  I'll give it a try ASAP.

BTW, if somebody has a better alternative for rust prevention in a seasoned bore, I'm all ears (or eyes, as it were)

I generally clean as you described above, and oil well with Rem Oil with Teflon, from the green/yellow can. No problems whatsoever.
With BH 209, however, i clean the ML just as i would any other rifle, but i still spray and wipe a lot of Rem Oil.
