444 Range?
« on: August 15, 2010, 09:03:16 AM »
Got a Handi Rifle in 444 from my brother last year. I finally got around to shooting some with it this summer. Sent the frame to David White up in Oklahoma for a trigger job (which was exceptional). Took some reloads that my brother gave me and zeroed the scope, nice little 2 hole touching group. Fired a single shot at a steel plate we have hanging at 300 yards and actually hit it with one of those flying saucers! Drop wasnt nearly as bad as I expected. Was wondering if any of you other gun nuts had tried a 444 out to that range?

After posting this I read it when it popped up and was not aware that the name of a reputable gun smith was a censored word. I thought that this site was for the posting of information commonly useful to shooting enthusiast whether it be the name of a gunsmith (David White) or ammunition brands, reloading component manufactuerers and what not. Thats like saying I can mention CCI primers but not Remington. Whats the deal with this. I wasnt aware of censorship on this site. Well, until now anyway.

It's censored for a reason, questionable business practices and association with another censored site,  please leave it at that.

As for the 444, I've shot mine to 200yds, it's very accurate with 240gr XTP, 265gr FPs and 355gr Beartooth cast, these are 100yd groups.

The longest shot I have made on a deer was with the 444, 265 yards. I estimate the drop at around 18 inches. It was with a factory load, 240 gr, complete penetration. Doe ran about 40 yards. It was from a late 60's model marlin. It gets about 1.25 " groups @ 100yd. I now have a Handi 444 that I am working with, using only cast bullet loads, just how good it will be remains to be seen, but it took my deer last year @ about 70 yards with the 245 gr cast. I would say that if you know your trajectory it is a 200yard gun with no problems at all, and probably 250.

I think the .444 shoots about like the .308.  I like it.

Elmer Keith liked the .44 cal. for a reason, and he said that a 4" revolver would shoot at least 2" farther than a 6". He, as well as quite a few others, shot (and still do) pretty far with satisfaction, and that with a .44Mag. A .444 will do even better in a rifle.
