17 rem. troubles
« on: November 30, 2003, 07:42:10 AM »
every time I resize my 17 rem cases I snap the decapping pin/rod.
Is this normal or am I doing something wrong. I watch the case go in the die so I know it is centered just right but still snap them.
The die set I am using is from RCBS
I was thinking about looking into a Lee die to see if it is stormger then the rcbs.

Anyone have a lee die?

You probably have a bent decapping stem. Try this: Without a case in the press, pull the handle untill it bottoms out. Adjust the depth of the die so a little daylight can be seen between the shell holder and the die, then tighten the main die lock nut. Remove the decapping stem and make sure it is straight (it's probably bent). With a new decapping pin installed, replace the decapping stem and leave its lock nut loose. Adjust the stem where the decapping pin protrudes from the die mouth by 1/4". Insert a lubed case and carefully pull the handle down untill it bottoms out. The decapping pin should push the primer out of the case. Adjust as needed but don't let the expander ball (on the decapping stem) touch the inside bottom of the case (that's what bends the stem). While the handle is down, tighten the decapping stem lock nut.

the RCBS 17 rem decapping pin and rod are one unit. I doubt that it could be a bent rod ( this will be the 4 th replacement rod/pin)
I have the die set just about the way you discribed

Rickyp :  If you have had 4 of them break already I would let rcbs know about it and see what they plan to do about it, I would send the set back to them for replacement, but you may not have to send back if you let them know they may just send you a replacement die. :D   JIM

already asked about it. they told me that they will just keep sending me the decapping pin / stem but only 1 at a time when I call
it is good customer service but a pain in the butt to  deprime about 40 cases then have to call for a new pin and wait the 4 days to get it in

with the die and a few pcs of brass they can surely iron out the problem, it must be an alignment problem, certainly you have checked to see that the prier flash holes are round even and centered, as well as being large enough for the rod to protrude, had a similar problem  sent the the die and all was taken care of without hassle. they really stand behind their stuff. good luck, R
