longreach weekend walk
« on: August 16, 2010, 09:29:07 PM »
Gday all.
went for a good old fashioned armed bushwalk on sunday and managed to bring the final tally to 3 goats and 7 pigs.

the goats were all caught off guard resting in a deep channel, as i rained a bit of hell down on them.
they all still had milk on their lips (so to speak), but the cocky wants them all dead, so i'm happy to oblige.
in fact, it's the only place i've ever been on out here where that applies, as most other places prefer shooters to leave them, and then muster if/when the numbers are worthwhile. the 165gr speer spbt pills from my 308 split 2 of the little fellas open like squashed sausages (both end-to-end shots), and needless to say, they did the job quite emphatically....

a silly boar that i kicked out of bed decided to cross in front of me about 50 yards away:

he had ok choppers - here's a pic with a prototype butt-stock cartridge holder a good mate made for me to try out - it came in very handy.

i busted 3 young pigs later on in some lignum - managed to score 2 of them - a small sow and small boar.

typical lignum area:

went to the other end of the block to check a dam that often holds game, got this sow sleeping under some prickly acacia:

after decking the sow, i saw a large boar exiting the scene that i hadn't seen before. he was moving along perpendicular to me at a fair clip, probably 150 yards off. he rolled on the first shot, and i thought "crap i'm on fire with the running shots today". he then got up and went at a slow trot directly away from me. a texas heart shot dropped him for good. turns out i gave him too much lead with the first shot, and took the top half off BOTH TUSKS!!! upon examination, he was a very big pig for here, and he would've easily been a PB for me in the tusk department, had i not shot them off. still happy to drop the big fella though....

the scrub where he fell:

hope you liked the pics.

cheers!

G/Day Brian,  :o got in amounst em mate - bloody hell!

I'm wrapt the Stock Cover with cartridge loops came in handy for you. I've got them pretty well sorted out now for the rimmed cartridges. I reckon a second row of smaller loops to hold the sharp end of rimless cartridges in conjunction with some of your and my observations would hold them more securely

What a bugger shooting off those hooks, nasty wound, I'm pleased you dropped him next shot. I have no worries with culling for landowners but hate seeing wounded game lost.

The Boars up your way seem to have longer legs and be more rangy than those further south. I'm interested the large sow you shot has the same colouring as the vast majority of the ferals further south, particularly around the Bolon and Dirranbandi districts. Over the last 20 years natural selection has ensured the well camouflaged pigs with that Sandy, black and speckled coat have become the predominant type with straight black and other coloured pigs becoming far less common than they where. I wonder in 20 years if the lighter mottled pigs will be the norm up your way

Going hunting myself this weekend, finally convinced the missus it's bloody ridiculous buying meat and to get over her Bambi Sydrome and start eating what I bring home- as a well known Aussie hunter says - It's organic and it's free!

Good shooting and stay safe

regards Jacko

Gday mate.
Yes the cartridge holder went really well.
The loops proved to be quite secure over the day, and having the extra available rounds on hand proves to be very useful, given the 4+1 round capacity of the ruger.
I am going to get out again this weekend to a place I haven’t been on since last year – can’t wait.
The pigs are certainly out and about.
It certainly was a shame top take the big fellas tusks off, but his suffering was very short-lived – like you I hate the idea of an animal getting away with a nasty wound.
All the best for your hunt mate – where are you going?
Make sure you take plenty of pics.
Cheers - brian

G/Day Brian, I'm heading down to Mingoola as usual. Have fresh batteries in the digital - using it is another matter ???

Good to see the loops proved secure, the rimless cartridges did have me concerned. Last years drought breaking rain has helped the pigs out no end, things will only get better and here you are living in the heart of it all - Good luck on the new block mate.

EDIT - bloody rain ! road into the property is impassable - first hunt this year and I get washed out  :(

regards Jacko

that's a bastard of a thing mate - after all this bad luck you've had getting out hunting, you must be due to win lotto or something!

I'd like to say right now, bsrecurve, that I hate you fervourently. >:( ;D
Great shooting, mate, and I'm jealous as.
I think I'm the unluckiest pig hunter in Oz and to see these porkers you've taken reminds me of my failure to knock over any yet.
Keep up the good work, eh. ;)
