Magnum Primers in 45-70
« on: August 25, 2010, 12:51:59 PM »
The reloading guy at the local shop was out of large rifle primers but said he had many people using magnum primers in a lot of non-magnum loads, and said the Winchester Magnums would work well in the 45-70.  I am expecting to load the 405 grain JSP to about what the factory loads are for this bullet, and probably also some 300 grain JHP load near the factory spec for that bullet.  There may also be some 405 grain lead bullets to medium levels.  Powder will be Rel 7, 4198, 3031.  The rifle will be a Ruger #3, a H&R Handi Rifle SB2, and an H&R Shikari, which is limited to trap door level loads.  Does anybody have any concern or advice about using magnum primers for these loads and guns?

Thanks!

just prime some brass and try it in the handi before you load a bunch for it.

I've been using them for over a year.  Just start low and work up loads as usual.  It will increase pressure with some powders, so load accordingly.

Reloader7 is great for the .45-70 in my experience.  Almost all my loads now use this except round ball loads for plinking/varmints and those get Unique.  For your Shikari, my Trapdoor level load with Hornady Interlock HP's or FTX bullets is 34.3 gr. RL 7 and will not have any issue with the magnum as there's a good bit of open case area.  For the std. models, I find that 46.7 gr. is my best accuracy without huge kick, so I'd probably drop to 43gr. starting point with RL7.  I don't have loads developed for the other two powders, but someone else might chime in on those.  8)

Thanks for the advice - I was halfway expecting some dire predictions of doom.  Ready to load then...

There worth trying especially if your using ball powders like 332 335 748 ect. Just back off one grain from a  max load and you should be fine.

I use probably the hottest mag primer Fed. 215 for my 45-70 loading. I load black powder most of the time though. I get great accuracy and it lights them up good. I used the Fed 215 with 28 grs AA XMP-5744 and the Lyman 457193 bullet that drops from my mix at 418 grs to duplicate about the same velocity as 70 grs of FFG with the same bullet. It is really accurate out to 200 yards in my Sharps rifle.
