Suggestion on a new bow setup
« on: August 10, 2010, 08:21:32 AM »
Ok, well, SC has gotten restrictive on their hunting seasons this year.  Used to be Aug 15 - Jan 1 with some WMA open to guns the whole time.  Now that's private lands only.  WMA land doesn't open until Sept 1st and for the first month it's bow-hunting only.

SO, given that I don't belong to a hunting club, I figure it's about time I take up bow hunting :)

I have never bow hunted before, but back around 10 years ago I did go through an archery phase.  I was in high school at the time, and a friend of mine was big into it so we'd go to his house most evenings and shoot.  They had a lot of foam animal targets and such setup.  I just used one of his extra bows at the time (the loaner was a Bear IIRC, but I can't remember what model - he was shooting a PSE at the time).  At the time even though it was a foam deer target, I was getting pretty consistent on hitting the kill zone from between 25-35 yards away.

So, what I'm looking for is a recommendation on a good starter bow.  A package is fine, but I'm ok with buying the trimmings separately too.  I'd be looking for something primarily for hunting, but I'll also be doing a decent amount of yard-practice with it too.

Also, anyone know what the typical clearance discount is on setups at the bigger stores after the season (say at Dicks or Sports Authority?).  I sincerely doubt I'd be practiced enough to head out in the field for this season anyways - moreso planning for next year, so if I could save a decent amount by waiting a few months then I'm all for that.

Thanks for any advice offered.

Update: any opinions on a Jennings Buckmaster 2000?  I found one used in a local shop for $99.  Has rest, stabilizer, and fiber optic sights installed.  Looks to be in decent shape - a little scratched up, but basically just looks like woods wear.  Two pieces of camo tape on the upper limbs kinda got me scared at first, but checking photos online it looks like there's a brightly colored logo on the limbs there so I'm guessing a previous owner just taped over those for the sake of hunting.  Draw length is 29" and draw weight is 70lbs.

My father offered to give me his old bow - a Bear Whitetail Hunter, but looking it over it looks a bit "antique".  Can't even mount a regular rest on it.  I figure I'll pass on that one :).

Any of the fred bear bows are great. They are excellent bows especially for the price, and hunters from beginners to old bow hunting vets use them. They have an excellent brace height (which means more forgiving) and they are really good quality.
