Want info on this special Scout pistol
« on: September 04, 2010, 03:26:18 PM »
Can anyone help me out?  This is like new, appears nickel plated?, engraving also goes around backstrap and grip.  This is .50 cal., bought new by my wife's late husband (he passed in 1999)  Do not have box or ramrod. (unless it's in a box I haven't looked into...)

I have intentions of selling, but not until I satisfy myself of the value.

I have the latest Blue Book of Modern Black Powder Arms, but all I see is the listing for the standard blued Scout.

Thanks!!
Tom

tomis, I believe that is a pistol that was  built on the same receiver as the scout rifle.
However i have never seen an engraved nickel plated one, most were blued steel and brass.
If you remove the forearm, there should be a allen head bolt which holds the barrel to the receiver.
It can then be disassembled down to trigger assembly, receiver and barrel.
It did come from the factory with a ramrod. It has a unique nipple which screws directly into the barrel, and uses a #11 cap.
Sorry, but I have no idea of the value, could be of moderate value to a collector.
You may be able to download the manual from Thompson Center, not sure.
Hope this helps some. TC

I hadn't had my Scout out of the safe for a while, and seeing yours prompted me to take a look.  My Scout is a factory production model, with what appears to be a color case hardened frame.  I know Scouts were made in 50 and 54.  I also have never seen one engraved, and don't recall a factory or custom shop option.  I may be wrong on that.

If it is custom engraved and finished then the value will be determined more by the quality of the work.  When I bought my Scout it cost around $200, but that was years ago.

Let us know what you find out.  That looks interesting.  A closeup of the engraving would be nice too if you can.

I do have a manual that came with.  I actually may have seen the ramrod - got so many boxes...  Here are some closeups of the engraving.

You should call Thompson and ask them about it. They can maybe tell you if it was factory engraved and when it was made.

Scout pistols where made in 45,50 and 54 .Very few 45's where ever produced .
TC never did any engraving on any guns to the best of my knowledge .I would have to say that he must of sent the gun out to have it done .
As for TC helping you out on this pretty much all the oldtimers have retired .You should be able to find a ramrod through TC or Ebay I would think .
I would look real hard through all your boxes and paper work and maybe you will get lucky and find out who did the work ,it sure would help the value .

Whoever did it sure did a real nice job !

Thanks for showing us a real nice gun !

Talked to Kathleen at T/C Customer Service today.  She said she thinks the pistol was done in the Custom Shop, which is for the time being closed.  She said it was beautiful.... and would check to see if the T/C museum was interested in it.  I had also asked about a T/C Seneca .36 Cal that I have with original box.  In asking why it came from the Custom Shop (I have the original invoice, August 1993) she indicated that the few .36 Cal. Seneca's that T/C made all came through the Custom Shop.

So I'm still not satisfied that I know what to charge when I sell them.....
