Model 141 gunsmith
« on: August 08, 2010, 06:32:10 AM »
Anyone have a gunsmith that works on Remington Model 141's.
I'm having a problem with the one my uncle gave me,and think I need a smith to check it out.
It will pick up the shell from the magazine, but as I work the action forward, the shell tips in the front not allowing it to be chambered.
 Thanks 1Longbow

Any smith should be able to help but perhaps you'd like to try fixing it yuourself? The 141 Winchester is a fairly simple rifle and you should be able to figure out the cause.. Has this just started or has it always been this way?

I got from my uncle this way. I have a schematic of the gun and I'm pretty handy with guns but this one has me baffled.
The shells that I'm using are factory original. Like I said it picks the shell up ,but as I start to move the action forward, the shell tips down, not allowing it to chamber. Thanks for your reply---1Longbow

The rifle is failing to feed in a fashion that usually indicates a weak spring or deformed feed lips in a magazine fed rifle. It can also mean the spring is installed reversed front to back in some rifles. I'm not familiar with that magazine ao am a bit at a loss. The feed lips top edge should be paralell or slightly open at the front. I use a dial valipher to check.. heck the spring tension of the follower at the front and the rear, they should be fairly even or slightly heavier at the front..

Sorry guys but that last post was a brain burp--I was thinking of a different flavor of M141. The remington M141 is a top locking pump rifle that is striker fired. The tube magazine feed mechanism complicates the feeding cycle.. It's not easy to diagnos the problem it sounds as if the carrier or it's spring (carrier lever spring) is not strong enough. The carrier may simply be worn or the sprinmg may have collapsed over time. Either will require replacement and likely by a good smith.

Hey gunnut69,
Well I may have figured it out. You talking about a magazine, got me thinking about the magazine tube, and that maybe something was wrong there. So today I played around with it and noticed that the magazine plunger was actually underneth the load gate, and would not allow the load gate to depress without me pushing the plunger forward. So i'm thinking that maybe the plunger is not stopping forward enough and is following the shell to far into the action. Does this sound plausible?--Thanks 1Longbow

Some tube systems work that way. Others use a stop that retains the shell in the magazine until released by the carrier or bolt. I haven't worked on the Remington 141 enough to remember. It's just been too long!!!
