Another barrel length question!
« on: September 11, 2010, 05:04:04 AM »
I'm sure this has been beat to death, but I can't find it anywhere.

Is there a difference in 22lr accuracy with different barrel lengths when using a scope (not iron sights)?  4" vs 5.5" vs 7" vs 10".

Thanks!

With a scope I can't think of any advantage to any barrel that effectively uses the powder charge.

Normally, the accuracy difference in barrel length comes from the increasing  sight radius as you increase the barrel length.  I suppose you could get a tad more velocity from longer barrels which could give you a tad more consistency, but I doubt it has much affect.  That being said, I believe I see a bit less sensitivity from ~7" barrels than I do with 5.5" barrels.  That too may be a figment of my imagination.

I believe barrel length is more a matter of preference.

You all seem to be on the same page with others.  I was told in the past (by a competitive shooter...with trophies!) that the only thing needed to stabilize a bullet is to impart the proper spin.  That can be accomplished with a 2" barrel.  So accuracy is not dependent on length, but proper spin, velocity, etc.

Thanks!

Yeah, but I use the short barrel excuse around folks who don't know better ;D

Why didn't I think of that.  Where is my hacksaw?
