Glenfield 30A with really old lyman peep
« on: August 26, 2010, 03:11:03 PM »
First off, I hope Glenfields are welcome in this board. Anyways, I had a old model 30A 30-30 passed on to me. Its in real nice shape with one of those old style lyman peep sights mounted off the side of the reciever. The problem is the front sight is missing and I have no clue what size to order. I did have a marbles gold bead laying around but it shoots about 4-5 inches high at 25 yards. It just has a 41 on the base so I dont know its size. Anybody have a similar setup they can point me in the right direction with. Its not a front ramp, rather a dove tail front. Thanks for any help.

IIRC, the #41 front sight is a little high, but there should be enough elevation adjustment in the peep sight to crank it higher, to zero the rifle @ 100yds, anyway.

The peep sight bar will simply sit a little higher over the receiver top than it would with a lower front sight blade, like a .375"

Because of the different type front sights on my Marlins (similar to your Glenfield), fiber-optic/gold bead/etc, they all zero with different height front sights (peeped), between .375" & .406" - So the best thing you can do for yourself is to first shoot the gun @ 100yds.

If the rifle is still high @100yds, a measurement of how high (inches), will tell you how much higher than your existing front sight blade a replacement needs to be, measured from the bottom of it's male dovetail to the top of the bead.

You're going to need a higher front sight than on a 336 since your Glenfield sight dovetails into the barrel.  Skinner sights has a calculation to figure the height, but I'll bet it's somewhere around .700"
