Author Topic: current choices for 2hp and 6-9.9hp outboards? (Read 1280 times)

Is been 20+ years since I've lasted used outboards on a regular basis.
I need a ~2hp for my 16ft canoe,and a 6-9.9hp[plus or minus 14-16ft aluminm boat].
It used to be Johnson,Evinrude,then Mercury for fishing.
This days??Johnson?,Evinrude?,Mercury?,Honda?
I'm looking for machines that simple to use/maintain,not exorbitant in price[oxymoron??].Used/demos are OK.I'm in western N.Y.
Appreciate the advice.

Briggs & Stratton recently came out with a 4 stroke in a 5HP I believe, for around $800. The 4 strokes use less gas and since it is a Briggs & Stratton engine parts should be available at any parts store. The down side is that it is a little larger than the standard 2 stroke.

Find you a good used Johnson/Evinrude/Nissan for the 2HP motor. For the 14' jon boat I'd go with a Johnson/Evinrude 15hp. It's the same motor as the 9.9HP with some carb and port changes. You'll find the extra HP nice to have and it costs no more than the 9.9.

2 lakes that I fish are restricted to less than or equal 10hp.Gotta stay with that limitation.Am looking for semi-V 14-16ft aluminum boat.Not fond of jon boats-have used them in the past.

We used to have the 10 hp limit on the game and fish lakes in this state. We all used 15hps with 9.9 decals. Thank God they lifted that restriction, now we use whatever we have!

On the lakes in our state that had a 10hp max limit for so many years. We are considering starting a petition to impose a minimum hp requirement of 60hp. Our club feels this would make the lake a safer place to fish as we wouldn't have all of the little boats getting in the way as we blast off for tournaments. What do you guys think?

The 2 lakes are public water supply sources.We're lucky that we can even use gasoline engines.I'm glad for the hp restriction too.The lakes are small enough,that hp over 10hp is excessive.

Can't get too much horsepower! Just have to know when and where to use it. The bad thing about HP limits is that it effectively closes a public resource to segiment of the public who might not own a motor under 10hp. My last post was "tongue in cheek" to illistrate that point. Imagine if the lakes were closed to motors under 60hp. What an outcry there would be from those who didn't own a 60hp or above! There has got to be better ways to handle this, like "no boats on plane" or speed limits or "no wake zones". That way we can fish with the rig we have wherever we want. Now, doesn't that sound fair?

Surprised I didn't get any comments on my last couple of posts. They were intended to provoke thought. Guess it isn't working. My point is: you can't legislate good sense, any piece of equipment can be used in an unsafe manner, be it 1hp or a 1000.

Been looking at 4 stroke engines. Seems calif is outlawing 2 strokers after 1 jan 2006. Most places want an arm and a leg for 4 strokers. My son-in-law has a little 5hp Nissan, got to looking into them as they also make 4 strokers. Check out CABELAS, they handle the nissans. After comparing prices they were almost $1700.00 dollars cheaper to all the others shipped to my front door. This was for 15hp. $2040.00 (round figuer) beats the $3800.00 Honda wanted for same engine. They also carry the 2 strokers from 2hp up to ?
