Moving to Portland, TX, what to expect????
« on: September 30, 2010, 04:42:46 PM »
Moving to Portland, Tx in a about 6 weeks. I currently live in the West Texas Plains area and have all the bird and hog hunting I could ever want, for FREE. I just do not know what to expect as for opportunities to hunt and the costs???? I already have the fishing figured out, convinced the wife to get a place on CC bay, lol.

Thanks for any input,
WestTx4570

Expect frequent wind, and lots of good fishing.  I have family down there (fishers not hunters), but nothing known about hunting.  I think you are close enough in Portland to drive to some very good deer and hog hunting to the N/W, but I couldn't provide info on where.

expect to pay for EVERYTHING... hunting of all sorts is by lease or purchase only.  Boating is okay unless you touch someones dock, then you have to pay a dock fee.  Taxes are outrageous to make up for the lack of income tax.

As you can see, I'm disillusioned about Texas.  Only been here three months and ready to LEAVE!

I hear ya. Ended up getting a place on Nueces bay, about 100 yards from my patio to the water. Haven't had much luck with the hunting issue, but not totally moved yet either. Guess my drive to hunt will become a little longer as is my deer lease is in the Valera area. Was down there about a week ago and got all sorts of excited on the size of the Specks and Reds coming out my area of the bay. They say there is some pretty good duck hunting in the area, just hard to pay to huntthem  when the last 40 years I just drive about 15 miles and shootem for free off the playa lakes around here. Thank you guys for any and all feedback.

Sorry to hear that NGH, give it some time, three months aint enough time to get your feet on the ground much less make good huntin contacts. check out Texasboars.com, ya might find some huntin pards there. Also Are you on a military base?

PM me maybe I can help?

WESTTX4570 you have some great fishin down there and between you and SA is some of the best huntin land i have ever seen.

yep, I'm a new member at Texas Boars.  Been lurking around there for a while though.  I'm on Lackland AFB in SA.  No hunting on base.  I'm working on a deal with a couple of guys now.  I MIGHT be able to go out and shoot some little piggies if the guy decides there are too many on his place.  It's like this though... if you don't shoot them, next year there will be twice as many!  Once you get too many, it's HARD to get back to a manageable number.  He only wants to let pay shooters after the hogs though.  Of course once there are too many hogs, his damage will go up exponentially and the hogs will spread farther and form new sounders and keep multiplying.

NGH,  I used to frequent TexasBoars.   Hunted with Kevin a number of times.  I read an article by the Texas Parks & Wildlife Dept a few years ago. They stated that in order to keep a population of feral hogs in check, a landowner needed to harvest 85% annually.  That is incredible!   I wonder if restricting feral hog harvest to pay shooters, especially in this economy, isn't going to bite the landowner in the back side in the long run?  Not to mention that neighboring properties also experience the same effects of over population from the hogs.

Think I must have the luck of an Irishman. Just got off the phone with a good friend, I havent talked to in a few months (my fault)and what do you know, his family is from that area. We already set up a deer hunt for Christmas. His grandmother owns about 1200 acres in the Refugio area and also has a lake house on lake CC. Talk about luck!!!
He said that no one has hunted it in years because they all live in West Tx now. I couldnt believe it, but I never asked were he grew up either......crazy.

I grew up in CC and go back regularly to visit family.  Great fishing for sure. Deer hunting can get expensive though..  The Refugio area has lots of deer, I see them all the time between there and Victoria on Hwy 77.    We own about 150 acres south of Refugio near Sinton that is covered up in dove and has some hogs on it as well.  Lake CC is a nice place to ski for sure also.

Mohawk,
I feel ya, just got moved down here this last Sunday. Humidity isnt as bad as it was this summer, but that will change, of course.
I have been talking to several guys around here and may already have a gator hunt in the process. Nice to wake up in the mornings without a lung full of dust and to goto bed after a good evening of fishing.
