Having lurked for a while and developed an adiction, I'm considering a larger project.Thanks to finding a piece of 3" dia. 4140 cold rolled at an auction I now have a golf ball shooter that is great fun to shell the pasture with !!!!
However, it has sparked the need to go bigger and better.
I have been doing some looking on line at civil war artillery and have run across the Woodruff gun.The piece looks to be a "doable" size for my lathe,an old Cinncinati 18 X 72. The material should be found with a little scrounging, I live in oil country lots of good sized "junk" of known alloys.The piece intrests me for a number of reasons, the least of which is it first saw action 99 years to the day before my birth ! (I think this is a sign, I need one
)
My trouble is 1) other than the bore, 2 1/8", and the aproximate length of 3 feet I have no dimentions to work from. 2) Only 5 are known to exist,no one seems to know what the exactly what the carrage looked like.
Anyone have any info or know where to look for it?
