Zulu,
The 1866 regulations said the same thing LOL. Didn't say it was a great way just the way the regs stated. The 1866 regs were the 4th edition and held most of what the 1862 regs stated. I don't have the 1862 Ordnance Instructions.

Funny thing is, I already had the 1866 manual saved in PDF form on my computer, but had forgotten, so I looked it up and tried to save it again!
I do like some aspects of Google books!

I also had it saved on my Computer. The first place I looked was Gibbon's. I don't think I have seen reference to pulling charge in land warfare, just naval warfare.

The barrels of CW field artillery pieces (smoothbore and rifled) could be depressed enough for gravity to move the fixed ammunition down and out of the bore; though one ladle was still issued to every Federal field artillery battery in case of an emergency. Ladles had to be used to unload the larger land-based artillery.

RIP John. While on vacation July 4th 2013 in northern Wisconsin, he was ATVing with family and pulled ahead of everyone and took off at break-neck speed without a helmet. He lost control.....hit a tree....and the tree won. He died instantly.
The one thing that you can almost always rely on research leading to, is more research.

Thanks BoomJ,
I just never would have thought that gravity was one of the answers. I would not like to be the person that had to catch a live Parrott Rifle shell.
