LYMAN 55 POWDER MEASURE
« on: December 02, 2003, 03:58:45 PM »
Hi ,y'll all. My dad has a old lyman 55 powder measure that he's been using over the years and it started binding .About  3 loads and it binds so you can hardly turn the knob. Looking on the inside  of the drum , seems dull. Was wondering if there is any fix to it or break down and by a new one?

I have been using one for years without problems.  Have you taken it apart?

If you are using a coarse powder like H4831 it will cut some grains.

My had his for over 50 years. The cutting part of the drum looks dull. I don't know if can be honed or work over and work right or  to buy a new  one.

I have one of those old Lyman critters that likes to bind up and squeek too. I have to take it apart and use some 0000 steel wool on it, then it works well for a few months. My Lyman has never been reliable with extruded powders but it functions quite well with ball and flake powder. I have an RCBS that isn't much better.

I stored my new one out in the garage.  After two uses it was frozen stiff.  I had to use a hammer and dowel to drive the cylinder out.  Bronze corrodes too, and the ozidation is larger than the Bronze.  This causes binding.  Clean it off good - I'm afraid to use oil on it, 'cause it will get into the powder.  A little graphite wouldn't hurt.  I now store mine in the air conditioned house and only experience a little binding when I first begin to use it each time.

That first time it was in the summer and very humid in the garage.  Perfect conditions for rust.
