357 mag rifle and all I can say is WOW!
« on: August 29, 2010, 05:54:38 PM »
Today got serious about the 357 mag rifle since my boy is using it for his first hunt, season is about 2 months away. All I can say is WOW@! Bore sighted it before taking it out back. Bore sighting got me within 4 inches, 3 round groups and a couple of adjustments and she was dead on.

Fired from sight vise at 50 yrds fired 5-3shot groups and the best toward the end was she shot two clover leaf groups. One group so tight that I thought I had missed the target until I noticed that two rounds nearly went into the same hole. This gun will definately outshoot me (US). Have 3 and half boxes of shells for the boy to practice with tomorrow.

the Recoil even with the rubber buttplate is next to nothing! I couldnt believe how little recoil there was with it. I could shoot this girl all day!

What ammo were you using?  I have been having a terrible time getting acceptable accuracy from my .357 Mag. accessory barrel, particularly with semi wad cutter shaped cast bullets.  It does, however, seem to shoot jacketed bullets pretty well, but nothing like the consistency you have apparently been getting.

If you get a chance go to the Buffalo Bore web site and check out the performance of their 158 grain JHP out of a carbine. Smoking hot.  In my bullet testing in 357 Magnum as far as jacketed bullets go the 158 grain Speer Unicore JSP is about the toughest JSP on the market. With a full charge of lil'gun it really penetrates. I bet the Speer bullet would be a good one in a carbine. Let us know how the hunt turns out.

Your barrel must be defective. Send it to me ASAP, I need one for a donor stub.  ;D ;) :D LoL  Just kidding, hang in there, it will come around and surprise you one day.  ;)

Niether of my .357 maxis were factory fit.  I did them both myself, and swapped  them around on various frames till I got a proper lockup.  I've had three .357 Handis, and all shot well.  I'd try the accurizing tips in the FAQs.  The fix may be as simple as an "O" ring on the forend stud.

I guess i'm lucky...my 357 mag barrel gets1-1 1/2" groups with 158 LRN and 5.5 grs 231. Factory Federal 158 gr hydra shoks will do the same. It seems like it's hard to find a load that WON'T shoot in this barrel.....Mike

All the Handis I've owned required no tune-ups, o-rings, or bedding.  They are very accurate guns.
