Prolong rope
« on: August 30, 2010, 03:15:18 PM »
Might anyone have a source for rope for a prolong?
Off the top of my head, it's supposed to be hemp, 4 strand, and 3inch, 18foot long.
The irons are no big deal, but the rope is proving to be a bear to locate, without requiring a second mortgage.
 Thanks

Did you check with the marine hemp suppliers on the cannon link list?  I'd try turkey foot first with a phone and tell him what you need if for.

Are sure about 3 inch-76.2 mm?

I'd have to check the plans to be sure on that size. I've checked numerous places, but there's bound to be a supplier of it, as since a repro. prolong runs about $180 or so, I'd like to think the irons are the majority of the cost.

Double D,  if moconfed is using the terms of the 19th century, he is correct.  Back in those days the size of a rope, Army rope, was specified in terms of it's circumference, not it's diameter like today.  A Garrison Gin used a 5" rope; today this would be (1.60") and the prolong used a 3", a little less than one inch in today's size, (.950").  Divide by pi.

Smokin' my pipe on the mountings, sniffin' the mornin'-cool,
I walks in my old brown gaiters along o' my old brown mule,
With seventy gunners be'ind me, an' never a beggar forgets
It's only the pick of the Army that handles the dear little pets - 'Tss! 'Tss!
