Tablet support for GBO?
« on: August 29, 2010, 07:39:39 AM »
Matt:

Are you working on supporting iPads? I tried one and want one, and will get one as finances allow. The iPad does not play well with some web sites, including this one and Comcast e-mail. The main issue is that there is no way to navigate long text objects like the one I used to type this post. There are no arrow keys on the iPad keyboard. Other sites do play well, but these are typically sites ahead of the pack in their adoption of html5.

I foresee a day very soon when most of my computer use is via iPad.  This thing is a shocking advance in personal computing.

The problem is not mine to work on. We use SMF or Simple Machine Forums to power the GBO forums and I do not have time or desire to try and code a different version for everyones ipad, ipod, iphone or anything else along those lines. My HTC EVO surfs GBO just fine and 4G mode is as fast as Broadband. I dont think anyone with a Android device will have any problem and for those who like the Apple flavor try this:

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/forumkast/id365838029?mt=8

From what I have read this is for SMF and makes it play nice with the ipad and others and is a free app that might even be better than surfing GBO normally.

Matt:

Thanks for the insight. That app is not generally useful because I can't edit an existing post. Some might like it as a temporary niche tool while forum software is being modernized. i think one of the big issues is that Apple is a real trend setter in the tablet market.  it's a very interesting time in PC technology now as some old standards, like Flash, are suddenly in jeopardy.

I use my Blackberry to access GBO at times. It works pretty good for basic surfing. Things it does not allow is, editing posts, seeing pictures blocking posts for folks you have on ignore. I fund it a very simple form for reading and writing posts though.
