So to the electric car folks. How many watts equal 1 horse power? What would the amp hour capacity of a battery need to to run say a relativly small electric motor say 50 horse power for 2 hours of continuous usage? What would be the physical size and composition of these batteries?

Heck... there isn't AN answer... there are ANSWERS.

Diesel over gasoline... My VW Jetta gets 39 mpg with two people at 60 mph... get the diesel version and get nearly 50mpg.  The TDi will run well over 100mph just like mine.  It will out accelerate mine too.  Works all over Europe and will work here if people will give it a chance.

Solar - free energy but not as efficient as it needs to be, then there is the storage problem.  Okay so you cover every building's roof in cells, what do you do with the power?  Gazillions of batteries?  But it is part of an answer.

Nuclear - What about the WASTE?

Wind - Same thing... an answer.

Geo-Thermal - same thing... part of an answer.

Natural Gas - still part of the answer.

Tidal/Hydro power - still part of the answer.

Face it... there is no ONE answer to get rid of OIL.  There are LOT's of partial answers.  It's up to people to actually use them.  Until FUSION power comes along... there isn't an answer.

I believe what scientist say about us running out of oil.

Nuclear is the only answer.  Once that's in place electric cars may be practical.  Coal isn't the answer.  Nothing is more destructive than coal.

Be careful they tried to convince us about global warming  ;)

Then that would make him right in this instance.  I don't mind burning coal it's the total destruction of the area where it's mined that's a problem.

I was in reference to running out of oil, we are not. Believe AL & the Global Warming boys if you wish.

North Dakota alone will keep us drilling at our current rate for the next 40 years and those fields will be producing 50-60 years beyond that.
Many old wells that had ceased to produce are now producing once again some at better rates than they did originally. We have wells that have producing since the 20s no one knows when they will run out.
All this dooms day running out of oil and gas garbage is BS put out by the fear pimps to control prices and people.
I've been in and out of the oil and gas business most of my life the technology for extracting fossil fuel from places we never dreamed we could is growing at an alarming pace and is expanding our fields. Y'all need to quit drinking the frac water and snorting the H2S these manipulators are serving.

Hooker, ND is the first area I thought of during this nonsense & that doesn't count Siberia & so many other places. The same clowns have been saying this 100 year poopoo for the past 40 years, I guess we have been in a time warp.  ::)

Well your answer is very complex. You see that all things are dependent on the size of the gas fired electric plant you have the battery charger plugged into. ;D

Oil will power the worlds cars for a long long time.  Right now oil can be made from algae for about twice the price of drilling, as well as made synthetically from coal at about twice the price.  As cars become more plentiful in China, India and third world countries, the demand for oil will increase for gasoline and diesel.  So, prices will continue to rise naturally, and when it becomes more economical to make it from algae and coal, it will be.  Coal produces about 40% of the nations electricity, natural gas about 25%, hydro power from dammed rivers 10%, nuclear 25%.  Working with the natural gas industry, we expect to have 40-50% of the electric production in the next 10-20 years.  Why?, because you can build a natural gas power plant in less than 2 years, with no environmental problems to deal with.  Nuclear and coal take about 10-20 years to jump through all the environmental hoops.  Wind from the plains states will jump from 1-3% right now to about 25% in this same period.  I don't like the idea of natural gas taking over coal as the primary electrical provider, because it can be better used in vehicles to cut oil imputs.  Problem is, everything must be used, and used wisely to stop imports.  Electric vehicles won't be cost effective until cheaper batteries and faster recharging are developed.

Guys, some of you are just not listening.  Alaska alone can supply all the Oil, Natural Gas, and Coal, needs for the country for hundreds of years.  Why are we letting the environmental get away with all this disinformation that we are running out of energy sources, and believing them.

As for me, I burn coal.  I drive up a riverbed during the winter.  I back my trailer under a bank where the river has cut into a coal deposit.  I take a pick and shovel, and in a couple of hours, I have knocked down more than enough, into the trailer to do me for over a year.  Burns fine in the fireplace and stove.  Looking at getting an outside boiler to completely heat the house with coal.  Best of all, it's free.  As far as I know no one else knows where this deposit is and I'm not telling.
