smokeless breech plug question
« on: November 15, 2011, 08:27:11 AM »
Hi All,

Anybody with a 45-70 MZ conversion using the Savage 10ML breech plug happen to know the diameter of the flash hole?  I tried smokeless powder in my conversion today for the first time, with very impressive first results, but after about a dozen shots the flash hole sooted up and I had a hang fire.  The current flash hole is .035" and this problem never happens with BH209 or other BP-subs.  I know the fire hole in a 45-70 brass is a lot larger than .035", just curious what the folks at Savage decided on for their plug.

thanks

BB

Why be difficult, when with a little extra effort you can be impossible?

well i shoot a .033 ventliner and change mine out at .035 because my groups open up they make a .030 ventliner but my savage shoots the .033 the best

.0315" & .032" for me shooting Blackhorn 209. That is the beauty of the vent liner, you can change them out for a few bucks vs throwing away the breech plugs whin the flash hole gets washed out.

At the range again this morning with a good cross wind but the I3031 powder works just great.  I am thinking the continued use of smokeless that the flash hole on my interference fit/epoxed brass plug is going to get a tad too large in the near future.  I think after MZ season is over I will get a savage 10ML plug and have it installed to replace my current plug.
