Need opinions.
« on: December 31, 2010, 09:17:48 AM »
Ok, so I bought a used Marlin 336 in .30-30 last week.  I decided to put a scope on it so I went and started pulling out the 4 filler screws on the top of the receiver.  3 of them, the rear most ones, came out fine, but the front most one was stuck.  I tried soaking overnight in industrial penetrating oil, a bit of heat from a propane torch, screwing in a bit before unscrewing to try and break the hold, but in the end all I managed to do was break to of my best hollow ground screw driver bits and bugger the hole.  Thankfully there appears to be no serious harm done since I was using the right driver bits.  Yes the filler screw is a write off, but the threads appear, and should be, still intact.  So here I am thinking I have to take the rifle to a gunsmith so he can get the screw out and chase the threads with a proper tap.  But then I got the scope mount I ordered.  I ordered a DNZ Game Reaper scope mount:

So I got to thinking, since there are already a couple extra holes drilled (obviously for other models) so it would not seem out of place if I were to simply not use the front most hole.  I would still have three screws holding the mount on, and with the scope on you would never be able to see down the hole with the buggered screw on it.  But the question I have that I am looking for opinions on, is would a three screw set up be fine for .30-30 level recoil or should I just suck it up and get the screw removed?  It's not really the cost involved (I would think a fix of this type would not be super expensive) but if I don't really need 4 screws holding it, especially on this sturdy a mount....the part with the holes is a full 1/4" thick.  And since we are not talking about magnum recoil I wonder.  I am not necessarily saying I would never get the screw issue fixed, but if I could put it off for another day......

So what is your opinion on the issue?

Thanks,
Brian

Brian,

Why not some JB Weld over the buggerd screw area !
If you can get closer, get closer
If you can get steadier, get steadier.

I would think you would be fine with the 30-30 recoil and that mount.  It's not going to flex under that much recoil, I would say 3 screws would hold fine on a one piece base.  DP

Ask this on MarlinOwners.com and see what they say.  If it is only going to be a hunting gun and not shot but 10 times per year I think it will hold.

Thanks for the comments guys.  I will take the question to Marlinowners forum and see what the think too.  I probably should just get off my lazy duff and get the things fixed, but between the odd hours the smithy has and my work schedule it means taking some time off from work to drop it off (and of course then pick it up.)  ;D

gun people do what they must to get it right. 3 may hold but everytime you take it out you will be thinking "will it hold" instead of keeping your mind on hunting. Bite the bullet and get it fixed.
