Finish, matt, gloss, or spray and bake matt
« on: September 01, 2010, 03:23:53 PM »
I'm having a custom Mauser built on a 1909 Arg action.  It has a thumb tang safety, walnut stock with hand checkering.  It's chambered in 6.5-06 with a shilin lite varnint barrel.  It will wear a Leupold 4.5x14x50 VXIII scope.  This will be my varmint/distance deer gun and my only "nice looking gun".  The question is what finish?  Gloss looks so classic but the matt finish won't glare.  There is also a product from Brownells that's spray on and bake finish that's saposed to be more durable than standard hot blue finishes and impervious to rust.  Opinions please.

Gun Kote is super durable, and corrosion resistant. Comes in lots of pretty colors. Classic looking it ain't. I use a ton of it on tactical rifles and ones headed to AK. But a nice classic sporter needs to be blued.

Lee is a first class guy to work with and his work is top shelf.I have had several guns done by him and the finish is very durable and he is very reasonable.

Tr hanks gentlemen, NO HALF BAKED FINISH on the classic Mauser.  I'm still not decided on matt or gloss.

Do both. Polish it out bright and fog with fine glass beads before you blue it. Looks like (sorta) a nice rust blue finish and I think it is quite attractive. I do a lot of pre '64 Winchesters that way (at least on the parts that are supposed to look like that).

I like Duracoat!!!  Can't say it enough.....One alibi though, stainless steel can't be parkerized. Parkerizing is to Duracoat as primer is to paint. ;)

Larry--condeming to the seventh level for just painting a rifle...well maybe if its really a nice mauser???? The clasic finish is still a rust blue and if you've done the work your self thus far there's no reason to stop.. It is slow and a little labor intensive but so's whats already been done.. Good luck and a few pictures to drool over would sure be nice.. I've GOT to get a beter PC and the no-how to post some pics...
