Hmmm, air rifles illegal?  EH gads   :(  That would be enough for me to move. Okay here is a varmint solution I have used in the past. Get an electric fence charger, one that runs around 9000 volts, strong enough for cattle and bulls. Run wires around porch openings. Use metallic screen mesh for a ground plane. More fun then a bug zapper.

Ammunition is like firewood. The more you have, the warmer you feel.

I tried that YEARS ago when we realized we had a rat in the appartment.  (I had heard the mouse trap snap and heard pitter-patter-clunk, pitter-patter-clunk as the rat walked off with the mouse trap attached.)  So I hooked up  ::) a 10kv transformer hanging the bait 10" above a large plastic lid full of water (all of that on top of the 'fridge).  Not an OSHA approved setup by any means.  All it did was knock the rat off the fridge.  I don't feel comfortable doing that outside - too many of my cats and the neighbor's cats that would be most unforgiving.  And, it might trigger a nuclear explosion!   :o

Traps set again.

Live catch trap.  Get a tarp that completely covers the trap.  Fold the tarp up and back from the entrance. The rest of the trap should be completely covered.  When picked up the the tarp should drap and hang down below the trap.  Only the entrance to the trap should be open.  Get a fresh can of tuna fish and bait the trap with that.  If you have a place where they are going under the house.  set the trap right beside that location and up against the the foundation.

When you capture the culprit, flip the tarp down to cover the open end and carry the trap away for disposal.  The skunk should never see you

You will be very lucky to ever catch the one you released again.

Back a hundred years ago when I did fur trapping, the local dog catcher would call me to catch skunks and racoons in the city. I caught a lot of skunks way back then at $10 a skunk.

That's very close to what I'm doing.
Trap near cat feeding area.  Don't think they're living under the poarch - looked and didn't see any signs.
Got the little one twice - had to put him down.  Couldn't legally transport, nor keep as a pet.
Cat food and chicken has worked, am changing bait.
Use a blanket to approach and cover - it hangs low and is scent free so far.

Another small 'possum this morning.

It won't be too soon for me to get back to cannons.

Now I remember what this thread reminds me of.  I just can't find a picture of the character.  CW in the cartoon "I Am the Hunter".  Loved that one on Saturday mornings.

Here's a pic of CW with his scented friend.:D

This cartoon was actually called "The King and Odie", the skunk's name was "Odie Cologne", get it (eau de cologne :P).

The cartoon you're thinking of was part of this same series, and was called "The Hunter" which featured a crime fighting bloodhound that was always chasing an evil fox; at the end of each episode the hound would blow a trumpet and then yell "I am the hunter."
RIP John. While on vacation July 4th 2013 in northern Wisconsin, he was ATVing with family and pulled ahead of everyone and took off at break-neck speed without a helmet. He lost control.....hit a tree....and the tree won.  He died instantly.

The cartoons are GREAT!  I'd missed that one.

Real life here is that the trap was MT yesterday and a small 'possum this morning.

Not a really small one.  Colors were similar to the last batch, therefore a straggler.

I HOPE it's not ANOTHER whole family!

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

This happens only ONCE in the lifetime of one's cat!

I set the trap (the LITTLE Have-a-heart) in the kitchen cabinet.

YUP.  Got it.

I caught a mouse - the FIRST mouse for my two 15 month old cats - Chirp and Twitter.

15 minutes of play time on the kitchen floor before SWMBO insisted I throw them all outside.

HILLSVILLE gun show now - several hundred thosand folks will be there over the weekend.  Likely to see SOME CANNONS!!

So the great white hunter has now taken the battle indoors. ;)

BTW: Isn't it "She Who Must Be Obeyed"? That added 'I' brings the acronym a little too close to resembling "bimbo" for comfort; if that were to be noticed you might also find yourself put outside with the cats and mouse. :D

That's an awesome picture. Here's the caption....

Tim,
It's amazing what positions cat's get their bodies into, it's also amazing that the instinct to stalk and kill is encoded in their DNA, but they have to be taught to eat what they kill.

Agree.  But once they learn - they're like a ball-bearing mousetrap!  (And I do enjoy watching a dog take after rats when shelling corn - there's nothing like it.)
