seeking composite stock for Winchester Pre 64 M70 30-06.
« on: August 30, 2010, 01:55:03 PM »
Since I've been convinced not to trade off my Pre 64 M70 ca 1949-50  - can anybody direct me to a source for a composite stock that will fit the rifle with minimal work?

Moderate price would be nice too but easy fit is more important.

I'm looking to lighten the gun a bit and for a recoil pad so my 12 yr old can shoot it.

thanks

You might try calling Dave or Matt at Hill Country Rifles. Everytime they fully accurize a rifle, they install a new stock and keep the old one. They have a synthetic Win 70 stock that did belong to me.  :-\

Thanks guys, I'll have to check 'em out.  I tried a couple other places. One quoted me more than it would cost to buy a whole new rifle - and not just a bargain basement model.

This may not be a big help as it isn't a composite, but I did see that Richard's Microfit stocks does have the action inlet for pre-64 model 70's.  There are even a couple in the 50% off bin.  If you gave them a call, perhaps they would have a solution.  Their old classic is possibly lighter than the factory and with the correct choice of wood, you might be able to shave a few pounds.  At the minimum, they can make you a reduced length of pull stock and add a good limbsaver recoil pad to it.  As I said, if this doesn't help, no harm done, just thought it might be a solution.  They recently discontinued their reduced weight laminate, but if you speak to them, there is a chance they can use that wood.  ;)

If you scroll down to the Winchester section you will see it on the available. action list.  8)

Thanks Tackle - your suggestion is a lot more in line with my budget. Might be just fine to have a wood stock that I don't mind getting gouged up and hold the original stock back.

Dinny, those Hillcountry rifles look mighty fine. Wish I had the cash to grab that shorter .375 - would be just right for my buffalo hunt. Got to drooling over quite a few of the items on hand there.

And Quick, Mr. York got right back to me real quick.  Looks like he does very fine work. I'll have to think about his options but doubt my budget can swing it.  Was drooling all over his site too. His light wt 338-06 improved is a temptation.
