remmington sluggers through a rifled barrel????
« on: September 12, 2010, 06:09:32 PM »
Is it safe???  Is it accurate at short distance?  My son and I tried shooting rifled type slugs through the smooth bore but at 35 yards the bead covers a 10 inch target.  Causing us to shoot outside the black.  Neither of us are doing well enough to want to shoot much more than 20 yards with that barrel.  The slug barrel has open sights and is alot easier to focus on a target but $15 for 5 shots is pretty expensive.  We usually hunt thick woods and most of our deer are shot within 60 yards.  I don't need 3" groups at 125 yards, but I don't want to go cheap and be totally unhappy.
Thanks.

Might want to consider these.  If you don't mind a lot of recoil and can find them, they make a non-managed recoil version.  Mostly stellar reviews from guys even with rifled slug barrels.  8)

They're not safe at all for deer, they tend to cause massive blood loss and death. ;)
I've shot Foster type slugs out of several rifled barrels and never really saw a reason to shoot saboted slugs, especially at the distances you are talking about. I found the Winchesters to be most accurate from my guns, then Federal, and Remington. I've also shot plenty of slugs out of vent rib barrels with bead sights. If I had to do it now I would mount a scope or red dot on it, or at the very least one of the turkey sights for vent ribs.

Thanks for the replies.  I got the info I need but should have been more specific.  We are shooting a Mossberge 500 12 gauge.  The rear sight is dove tail on the slug barrel.  The smooth bore is vent rib with two beads.
Hunt-m-up, I'm glad you mentioned Winchester.  That is what is available at my local Meijer.  Less than $4 a box.  At that price I don't mind trying them out.  I was just afraid that they harm the barrel or worse yet us.
tacklebury, sometimes I cand thoes at Gander Mountain.  I might try a box.  If they work good I might order more.
Thanks all.

Back when I lived and hunted in Illinois I shot both Rem and Win slugs through a cantilevered rifled barrel on my 500 with good results.  I had a 6X scope and it was more than adequate for deer in the thick woods.  Before that I had a short smooth barrel on the gun with the gun drilled for a scope.  The only problem with the short barrel (came with iron sights and I never could shoot any iron sights well) was it was so light that it was a bear to practice with.  The longer rifled barrel helped a lot.

Well thanks for the help.  I tried winchester, winchester winelte, breneke K.O., and federal.  All in 2 3/4".  By far the winlite was the best slug through that barrel.  I shot 5 times with all slugs.  Using the winlite 4 shots were less than 3 inches from the centre of the target at 40 yards.  I went back to 60 with the 5th shot and was 4 inches low but on centre.  My son will be shooting thoes for deer season.  They did have a noticeably less recoil thatn the rest of the slugs.
