my 38-55 BC compared to a 30-30?
« on: September 09, 2010, 01:40:32 AM »
I load 33.0 grains of IMR 3031 using a sarco mould #255 grain soft lead bullet BHN12 4 grease groove
I would say FPS around the low 1700-1725 no gas check
I wonder how it would compare to the 30-30 winchester

Starts out with a bigger hole even without expansion, and if that bullet has a flat point it should impart a good bit of shock. I consider mine as accurate for field use as our Win.'94 carbines, but I do have an old Weaver K-2.5 on it. Ballistically it will loop in more than the higher velo 30-30, but on deer sized game, and the normal ranges they are taken, no worries.
BTW, a 38-55 as a varmint gun for crows and woodchucks is great practice. I sure like mine........

Don't know about cast bullets, but my 38-55 with a 265 gr jacketed soft point put the hurt on Bambi last year!   ;D

Just a feeling comparing that kill to the ones with a 30-30, again w/jacketed ammo, the 38-55 got significantly mo smack down power!   ;)

Who'd a thunk it...  :-\   ::)   ;D

The 38-55 has a slightly larger case, 10 gr more case capacity so you have the option of about 2 1/2 % more velocity with the same bullet weight all other things being equal AND a much bigger bullet diameter and potential of almost twice the bullet weight.

All this translates into a more effective kill delivery system..."all things being equal".  The only way to know for sure is to load each to their optimum potentials and go hunting...objectively.

I would much rather use my 356 Win levergun than a 30-30 levergun, and I think the 375 Win is even better... except if I used my 45-70...then again there's the 510 Makatak... :D ;D ;) ::)...ah-ha...the picture is forming...the bigger the better....hahahahahahaha

At the lower velocities you are shooting, the larger, heavier bullet would still be more effective I think, but it depends on what you are shooting at and how far away.

I've taken several nice elk and deer with a 54 cal LYMAN Great Plains smoke pole shooting a 0.535" round ball with 80 gr Goex FFG at around 1575 fs.  Most just folded up, a couple took a few steps, but all the animals were within 30-75 yds and all the balls penetrated through and through.  BIG holes. That load is just about equal to the load you are shooting.

As usual...answers contain a lot of "it depends"...and so it does.

The 38-55 and the 375 Win are equals for all intents and purposes and the 375 Win, in rifle AND pistol form has taken game all over the world...BUT..."it depends" on all manor of factors.

Luck

THANK YOU FOR THE REPLY
I think I will just stay with the lead bullet in 255 FP which has a large Meg Plate
I think the most I can get in the 38-55 case now maybe 35 grains :I find 33.0 grain of IMR 3031 shoots outstanding and should be more then enough for the largest whitetail out to 125 yards.I shot the gun the other  day at the 100 yd target funny no scope only williams rear peep FP series my Buddie said I shot it better then his 30-06 that was scope
I had 6 rounds at the 100 yd target ran about 4" group
