..Why do they drop a sensible line of guns when they would seem like a good, sensible rifle which could be produced economically?
   Immediately comes to mind the Savage model 170 in 30/30. This would seem to be an ideal eastern woodlands rifle for deer & black bear.
  Obviously, they could be produced quite economically, since they are a low pressure round, and the 170 is based on a shotgun action.
      Do you suppose they got their death certificate because of the gun writer's penchant for "super-duper" rounds?

No, they got dropped because Savage never bothered to fix the action's problems. I had one. It had a problem with the slide lock, and the more I read, the more I learned many others had the same issue.

Having said that, it was a very accurate and handy weapon. But both times I shot at an animal with it, it jammed. I did knock dow my first buck with it, but I lost a beautiful bear because of that. I sold it shortly afterwards.

I had a Savage 77 pump shotgun as well. It certainly was no great prize - went off once with my finger nowhere near the trigger. I was scared to hunt with it after that.

    I guess that's certainly a good enough reason, too bad they didn't get around to re-engineering the product..

It is too bad. I liked mine a lot. But, it wasn't reliable enough.

The ones in .35 Remington are supposedly better.

I suspect that if you were a capable gunsmith you could keep one of the rifles running OK, but I didn't have time to start bending steel parts willy-nilly to try to improve the action.
