Buck shot through a rifled barrel

I just picked up a newish Mossberg 500A with a rifled barrel.  Can I shoot buck shot through it?  I assume you can but need
to hear from the experts like you guys on this.

You can, no problem at all.  It will throw a pattern that looks like a doughnut, there will be a circle of shot with a hole in the middle.  Larry

In a SHTF situation having a donut dunking hole in a bad guy is not all bad

You could also pick up a smoothbore 18-1/2 or 20" barrel with choke also to add to it.  My Mossy 500 has the 28" barrel with choke and the ported rifled slug barrel and it takes about 10 seconds to swap em.

I should have said if it's a 12 ga.  I think the A model is, but was assuming there.  If it's a 20, the shortest smooth barrel you can get is 24", but that's still not bad.

Yes, it is a 12.  Actually, I would like to trade the cantilevered, rifled slug barred for a rifle sighted one and am thinking about putting an ad in the classifieds of GBO.  Since the gun was "as is" it only came with the one barrel and I will also have to buy a bird barrel with the chokes.  The 22 or 24 slug barrel is great for rabbits as the cyl. bore opens up so meat isn't destroyed.  Distances are close so a slug barrel with 6's or 7's in a 2 3/4 works great.  The shorter length brings the shotgun to shoulder faster as well.

I figured out what to do with the cantilevered barrel.  I am going to trade the scope which came with it for a red dot rear sight which mounts on the rail just like one mounted on an AR.
