Chambering a Saimese Mauser what are the options?
« on: June 07, 2010, 06:41:43 PM »
I have a Siamese Mauser and want to have it cleaned up and rebarreled into an off beat chambering.  I was thinking of 348 Winchester Ackley Improved or 416/348 Winchester Ackley Improved.  Do you think this is doable?  I would even do a 450/348 Winchester Ackley Improved.  Who would you recomend to to the work?

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

bigboar

Easily any of the rimed rounds.  30-40 K, 303 Brit, 7.62 X54R  All are just different versions of what the Siamese is chambered in and ammo is cheap and eazy to obtain or load for.
348 Win
405 Win
416 Barns (45-70 necked to .416)
444 Marlin
45-70.

Having done one in 45- 70 and having to file on the feed ramp to get the big flat rounds to feed reliably the 348 with the similar shape as the Siamese 8X50R or 52R it would make it a little easier.
The OAL of the 45-70 is a little short for the mag and any of the necked rounds will give you a long heavy bullet.
I built mine as a Camp cannon when in bear country but the 348 Win would work for that or as a Moose mortor woods elk, or any other animal.

mcwoodduck lists the right chamberings and we shouldn't forget that Marlin bottlenecked 444 offshoot, the 400 Marlin or any of the JD Jones chamberings based on the 444 - same can be said for the 45-70 and its necked offerings.

375 JDJ would be neat but it is a little short.  Like a mini 375 H&H.
The 8X52 R siamese had an OAL of about 3" and the 444 is only 2.5 and most of the JDJ rounds are about 2.75"
There is lots of room in my mag for really big 500 grain bullets with room to spare and I think that is why I had to file away and change the feed ramp angle in the reciever.
After I wrote this I thought of 9.3X74R and grabed the Ctgs of the World to see OAL and measure it in the action.  Won't fit and I spent a couple hours looking for something similar in oompf and bullet size that would fit only to find your first idea  of 348 Win is it.
As my 3rd grade teacher told us.  Your first answer is usually the right one.

I am still leaning toward to a 348 Winchester Ackley Improved or a  416/348 Win AI.

I have a 45/70 siamese mauser that functions and shoot s great but was wondering about the .444 case with a .514 rim.  Do they work Ok in that .600+ boltface?

Can't be more offbeat than leaving it in the original caliber.

Hank:  I believe the Siamese Mausers have been chambered in the 444.  I saw one years ago and thought it pretty nifty - the gunsmith never said a word about feeding or extraction problems, so who knows.  And, iirc, I believe Navy Arms used to rebarrel the Argentine for 444.
