tang sight ?
« on: August 08, 2010, 11:06:29 PM »
I got a new tang sight today. the peep hole is tiny. maybe its so I can enlarge it to what I need. but my problem is that when I look through it I see a thread or web in the peep. I pushed a needle through it first. and then used a tip cleaner [from a welder]. I still see a black thread accross the opening. I was shure it was a piece of lint till I rotated it while holding it up to the light and saw the lint remain stable while the peep turned. has anyone else seen this? do I need to blacken the inside of the peep to stop any reflection? any ideas? thanks DR

Most of those have an eyepiece that unscrews to adjust a small amount of windage and also for replacement or different sizes.  It could well be lint or a hair caught in the threads.  You might want to check out the variable size eye pieces at Merit Corp. too.  I'm planning on getting one for my Williams GRS.  I'm getting the hunting size, but you might consider the larger if you are doing mainly target shooting.  ;)

If you turn the peep while looking through it and the line stays, it's nothing in the sight.  It might be time to visit the ophthalmologist; I started seeing a bright sliver like a crescent moon in the edge of my vision a while back, I have a detaching retina according to the eye doc.  We're keeping tabs on it for now.  There might be something similar in your eye, or maybe a scratch on the lens you didn't know you had.

Try looking through the sight with the other eye.  If it is nice and clear you may have something going on with the dominant eye.  I'm very interested as to what you find out!

I had my youngest son look through it and he says theres nothing there! so I put a much larger apiture in it from a shotgun sight and I dont see it in there. the merit disks look like the way to go. I also decided to bush the apiture so that theres no windage and use a windage adjustable front sight. thanks all. DR

There is a website (Soule or Vernier sights? - I forget) that describes these spider cobwebs illusion and suggests that user enlarge the peep hole size until they "go away".  Actual metal would be removed in the process, not cobwebs.  This was in the general category of 'which peep hole size is the correct one'?  I sometimes see the 'cobwebs' with my right eye, but not with my left; wearing my glasses seems to scare the spiders/cobwebss away.

Yep, its you.......make sure you check it in the conditions you will be using it, not just in the livingroom, etc. The best way to enlarge the hole is to use the very small 'number drills' that often come in a 'pin vise' set. Just lay out the bits and keep trying them in the hole until you get a good fit, then start upsizing the hole progressively. The finger powered pin vise will cut the soft metal just fine. Upsize and try, repeat as neccessary until you get a clear view.
FWIW, many people try to use an aperture that is too small a dia. You need the right amount of light coming in, for your eyes, for the centering effect to work.
