looking for help starting over
« on: December 06, 2003, 06:07:27 AM »
I am going to start reloading with my MEC 600 Jr again for the first time in twenty years.  I am going to reload shells to shoot trap for fun with my twelve year old daughter.

I have forgotten most of what I knew when I was reloading so I am looking for some help in reloading.

Could someone recommend shot type, wad type and powder type for some basic trap loads for a 12 guage?

Any other help like powder amount , shot amount and anything else would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks too all!

Charles...

You need to get a copy of the Lyman Shotshell reloading manual #4 for your loads.  Some of the best are made up with Winchester AA hulls, or the Remington STS hulls.  My load is generally the WW AA hull, the Claybuster equivilient of the Winchester WAA12 wad, 1 1/8 oz of hard #8, the Winchester 209 primer, and Red Dot or Green Dot powder.  I have not used some of the newer shotgun powders that burn so clean, such as Hodgdon Clays yet.

The powder manufacturers are a good source for pressure tested load data.  Try:

Charlie,

I would find some Remington STS hulls, Green Dot powder, Blue Duster wads, and either CCI or Winchester 209 primers.  Shot size I would use would be an ounce and eigth of 7.5 and get the load data from the Duster Wad website at:

http://www.dusterwads.com

If you wanted to use one ounce loads, substitute the Green Duster wads for the blue.  The Duster wads are an exact replacement for the Winchester wads and a bunch cheaper.

That's my fav.

Good to see a few "Green Dot" users-- that's also my preference, and the "new" cleaner Green Dot really is.

STS hulls are the best by far, Remington 209P primers fit them the best, and although I've used the clone wads-- I stick with AA's. It's the cheapest part of the shell, and I have had a few bloopers with clone wads.
