Fred Bear Compound Bow-busted limb
« on: August 23, 2010, 06:01:02 PM »
So, I decide it is time to get the bow out for several thousand practice shots. I slowly pull it about half way back and "SNAP". The lower limb breaks in half. The bow is a Fred Bear Guide Series I bought about 10 years ago. I have always liked it for its accuracy and easy of operation. Do I try to get it fixed or is this my chance to upgrade to a Mathews I have always admired?

Well, it depends!
Ya may check about a warranty from Bear. I've got a Reflex Excursion that has a lifetime warranty on it.

On the other hand, if ya have an place that needs scratchin' and a Matthews seems to do it just right, then trash the Bear and go wholehog on a new setup!

Not much help, am I?

I'm a guy with lots of itches.....so I would use it as an excuse to buy a new bow.  Unless you are so attached to the Bear that hunting wouldn't be hunting without it.

I looked at some Mathews bows today, they seemed a bit over priced. And the staff at this shop seemed uninterested in selling anything. So went went a couple of miles down the road and bought this one.

A knowledgeable and helpful staff makes a difference. I have owned a Martin before and liked it.

My experience with busted bows has been lousy. The answer usually involves "discontinued model, no parts and we'll give you $100 towards a new model, at factory pricing (about the same price as retail).

My last compound was indeed my last compound. I simply can't get used to a release, and the new stockless crossbows they are selling as bows have way too much pinch for a good release. So, longbows and recurves for this archer. I really don't have a beef with wheels, just the absurdly short bows that are being marketed these days.

Empty Quiver your pretty much spot on here, as I have both type of bows.  Two older compounds and several recurves that sure cost a lot less to set up and get going... ah wait a minute there is no set up with a traditional bow  :o

Ran into a couple of hunters yesterday, one with a Hoyt and the other a Bowtech.  Dang both were braggin about how much they got tied up in their bows... over $1200  Can you say STICKER SHOCK.

I still love what I have, but the new prices of bows today are out of control and now with Mathews new one that is due out in October with a sticker price of $2100.00 for a bare bow.
