load data for 30-40 Kraig Carbine
« on: September 12, 2010, 07:40:58 AM »
A friend has a vintage 30-40 Kraig carbine sporter (shame it was sporterized). All the load data I can find is for a 30" barrel not a carbine. Do you have load data that is appropriate for the carbine?  He will use this rifle for deer.  I'm thinking 165 gr Sierra Game King bullets will be the ticket.

The load data for the carbine is the same as the load data for the rifle. The shorter barrel wil give you lower velocity in most if not all cases, but it is still the chamber pressure that the rounds are loaded to.

+1 on what billy_56081 said.  BTW, Hodgdon's data, http://data.hodgdon.com/main_menu.asp, for the 30-40 is based a 24" barrel.

Make sure your friend knows that with its single locking lug, the Krag action is not to be hot-rodded.  Also, most Krag barrel bores are oversized to some degree.  He may want to slug it and if it's too much oversized, the best bullet may be hard cast, sized for his bore for best accuracy.

I have not tried any bullet lighter than 180.  My Krag did not turn in the best accuracy with the 180 grain sp.  With jacketed bullets mine likes the 220 gr round nose best so far at about 1950 fps.  My bore slugged .310 or .311 (can't remember off hand) but I have not tried cast bullets yet.  I may try some bullets for .303 british ......or not, I have too many projects as it is.
