RE-DO OF A RE-DO PICS ADDED
« on: December 05, 2010, 02:41:41 AM »
It was not long ago that my grandson Jack got me back too my roots and .22's---well it was/is his fault even though all he can do at this point in his life is drool.
I digress---One of my first finds, after buying the Browning take-down was a Marlin mdl 60--it had a god awful, beat-up stock.
I did the takedown, stripping/sanding, etc---and the results was a god awful piece of wood--even when refinished.
I bought a $45 synthetic pistol grip stock from Midway and it is a good-un.
BUTTTT---I was left with this god awful furinture of a stock. I am hard headed and I figgered I could not ruin what was ruins already.
Someone here wanted it---maybe---and he may still get it--as is--I have not decided.
Anywho--I bought me some Krylon primer and HIGH GLOSS APPLE RED Krylon. Took the stock down again--sandied and filled it and PAINTED IT.
I really do like the looks---you may vomit.
I will get some pics up today.
Blessings

I like it better than the commando special. Ron, You may have stumbled onto something, essentially the black paint worked like a stain I guess. The Ruger is especially nice.

Whatever flips your switch I guess.  ;D

If you are happy with either one of them that's what counts. Enjoy.

Well, I can't honestly say that I 'like' it.  You certainly shouldn't have any trouble finding it.  Now maybe a rusty brown, in a flat, to give it a Fall camo look.

Maybe you need some blue and white stripes on it. My grandkids painted my outhouse out at the orchard that way, even some stars too.

The red one I like well enough.  Like others I've done similar things and was satisfied with some and not so much with others.  The problem I have is with the plastic replacement.  You see I made the mistake of buying one of those myself to replace a bad stock and have regretted it ever since.  Yep, i'd stick with the painted one.   ;)

Elaborate further. It was a cheap replacement because I did not want a lot of $ in a new walnut.

Well you see, I bought one of the cheap plastic things for the very same reason you did.  I got the thing all fit and mounted and stood back to take a look and my first thought was I got what I paid for.  I had taken an inexpensive gun to begin with and made it look and feel even cheaper.  Couple of weeks later I stopped in a little out of the way gun shop I tend to hit a couple times a year to find he had three barrels full of used stocks.  I bought three of them for $15 ea. No they weren't pristine but i was able to refinish all three with little effort and they all looked great when I was done.

It's just a matter of personal taste.  Synthetic or plastic stocks have their place such as on the combat and hunting rifles to be used in adverse conditions and even some precision bench guns but that doesn't mean I have to like the looks of them.  The plastic one I bought is now in the back of a closet out of sight.  Can't even use it as a boat oar because the butt is all cut out.   ;D

I am leaning more and more to your thinking.
I am going to try and fabricate, out of fiberglass, a cheek piece and close in the butt, while keeping the pistol grip.

Mr. Layton, as a side note.  I've been looking for a picture but can't find it of an old bolt action 22 I had that was going to spend most of it's time in my old river boat.  This thing had the stock broken completely in two and wasn't worth much, so I pinned and glued it back together, cleaned out the insides and coated it with a liquid epoxy resin.  The outside got a coat of black Line-X type stuff that used to be used as chip guard on lower body panels of cars.  Silly thing looked so good when I got done with it I almost hated to leave it in the boat.  It now resides in a buddies charter fishing boat on lake Michigan.  He liked it so well that when he moved there a few years ago I sent it with him.

That sounds like fun---I like glass but not working it. Considering a bondo build-up an a couple of layers of glass for strength---just not sure if it would be stable.

Not mine, Bill.  They are pulled from another site I hang out on called Rimfire Central.  There is a guy that goes by the handle "Tuck" over there who doe some incredible paint jobs including murals of dessert and mountain scenes that would blow your mind.  Unfortunately I could not find any examples of those to post here.

OOOPS--I read the directions wrong.
The Minwax poly  says to wait 72 hours before lightly sanding and recoating. I thought it to be 24 hours.
OH WELL--I have already sanded---should I wait and resand or just go ahead and recoat?

Keep us posted. The add-on cheek piece sounds interesting.
And the red one is growing on me. Might have to try a John Deere green; decals and all.

Here is a pic of my old 22.  It had ugly wood and I stripped it and attempted to stain it but it was still ugly. A few rattle cans, some duct tape and some weeds for a template and spray away.
