Dyeing traps

Im looking to dye my traps for the upcoming season and i got some logwood dye. The instructions are very vague and give little info. How much water do i need to mix the dye in? How exactly do i boil them? I was going to get a big 10 gallon tub for washing dogs and stuff in. Then i was going to use my grill to heat the water up. Do i have to have the water boiling? How long do i need to keep them in the dye? How long do they have to sit before i can use them?

 When I dyed my traps(Inow dip them),I would use a 5 gallon bucket.It was 1 pound of dye to around 4 gallons of water(I think the old directions stated 5 gallons).I would get the water boiling with the dye in it,turn it down to a simmer and put in my traps.I would let it simmer for an hour or so and turn off the heat.The traps were left in the bucket over night,removed and hung up to dry--make sure they are totally dry before you wax.
 I have never used a grill,so can't comment on how it will work for a heat source.
 Part of trapping is experimentation--be it sets,ore dyeing traps.Have fun.

Ok thanks. How easy is dipping? Do i have to wax my dyed traps?

Waxing,makes your traps faster and also locks in the dye you just placed on your traps.
 I dip using speed dip mixed with coleman fuel--easier and faster for me..

Dakota954, I personally dip my traps like Tom.  One quart of speed dip to one gallon of coleman fuel; I mix it in a rubbermaid tub.  It takes 15 minutes to stir up and get it all together.  Once it's stirred up, just dip your trap down in it, leave it for a minute or two, pull it out, hang it up to dry and you are done.  Make sure the humidity is low or the traps will come out a little sticky and take longer to dry.  I leave mine out for a day or two.  Tom sells the dip.  One quart will do 4 to 5 dozen traps.  You don't have to wax your traps if you speed dip them.  Be sure to wear rubber gloves, it is hard to get that stuff off your hands.

you would really have to wrok to screw up dying traps-- as long as the water is black, it's going to dye traps. I used to leave themin an hour, but found that 15-20 minutes does just as well- after all, the dye bonds to the metal, it doesn't get "absorbed".

dips work fine on water, but if you are trapping canines, be careful with the dips.

my best year (until this year LOL) on coyotes was with speed dip- but was still unhappy with the dipped traps- esp in rainy weather when avoidance became an issue. i know some love dips on canine traps, but experiments I made on dips, vs dyed and waxed- showed me that while dips are quicker, the results are as well.

went back to dye/wax quite a few years ago, and will never go back to dips for canines

i cant really catch canines here anyway. in NJ its illegal to have a foothold trap and i think itd be a bit hard to catch a yote in a conibear. unless one of you have a way. . .
