Early MZ Season - Salt Fork
« on: September 30, 2010, 09:24:04 AM »
Hi All,

Anybody going or have you gone to the early deer MZ season at Salt Fork?  Friend asked me about going, I have never hunted at Salt Fork.  Curious if it will be a "Sea of Orange".   Would like to go as my Huntsman 50 is shooting very nice groups right now. ;D

thanks

BB

I used to go down there, but it's 3 hours from my house.  It was bucks only then.  TOOOOmany people!  One year we hunted across from the golf course, parked near the RV camp.  There's an old RR bed in there. saw a lot of does and not as many people, but I bet that ain't the case now.  30 year's ago I missed a world record class non-typ back near the area of the check in station with a brand new TC kit Hawken at 30 yards.  Had to drive home 3 hours with wet drawers...Google earth shows the area in excellent detail.  Oh, that area between the primitive camp and the rifle range used to be a good spot, too.  From the late 80's to early 2000's I hunted Wildcat Hollow.  Lot's of deer and not as many PPL.  Best of luck!

I hunted there a few times. Beautiful county. Nice deer. Plenty of Hooples from the city. Don't go there now.

I also hunted there once back about 10- 12 years ago when it was buck only.
I took a nephew with me and we had a 14' boat w/ outboard motor to get to some of the most remote locations and stay as far away from roads and other hunters as possible.  Sorry to say we didn't get any deer that trip but my nephew did get a shot at a small buck he jumped while walking and missed it.
It is a beautiful and scenic area during that time period and if you can get away and go, I recomend it !

I have not hunted there but know the area well. It is sure to have a lot of people. But if you hike back into the remote areas or use a small boat/canoe to get to some out of the way area you could do real good  ;)
