I remember the first time I read about sheriff joe. I was in a doctor office waiting room and I dont remember the magazine but it was decrying the inhumane way he was making inmates live in a tent city in the middle of the buring hot desert! :'( Well this was either during or right after the first Gulf War and my only thought was if a tent in the desert is good enough for men and women in our armed forces it is more than good enough for a bunch of criminals

That's the point they don't have a boss once elected . The city manager can't do much or county adm. If he follows the law he is good to go.

The "clown" you're referring to is Joke Arpaio....right?  I live in Maricopa county, and we're going broke defending this idiot in lawsuits because he doesn't bother to follow due process.  He has a good arrest record but a poor conviction record.

As an Arizonan abroad this is a first heard for me. Could you post a link to an article about that issue? Last time I was home my family was singing his praises. Of course, lawsuits run both ways ... any clown can file one, just or not. And any clown can be an activist judge. And many clowns practice law without actually upholding it. Either way, the people pay.

In most counties the County Corner is the only one that can arrest the Sherrif.

I'm pretty sure any law enforcement officer can arrest a sheriff who has broken the law.
But if the sheriff is with in the law he is the highest ranking and most powerful law enforcement officer with in his or her jurisdiction.
Yes even higher than the state police this is because a sheriff is elected not hired or appointed.
I believe a states Attorney General if elected would be the highest ranking officer within the state.
Not quite sure where a DA fits in there but should fairly high on the food chain.
