S&W 317 Kit Gun
« on: January 10, 2011, 06:05:44 PM »
I've been wanting one of these (3" Airweight) for years, however the price tag has always held me back. If anyone has one, how bout some good old feedback?

I have a  3" 317 and really like it.  I have shot about 2000 rounds in the last two years and have not had any problems with it.  It is pretty accurate out to 30 yards.
Now, if I was starting all over, I would probably get the new S&W Model 63, a stainless steel version of the same gun.  It weighs about 25 oz vs the 11.9 oz for the 317, but that doesn't seem like a big deal.  I will probably get a 63 sometime.

I really like carrying the 317 when bumming around in the woods, and sometimes forget that I have it on when I go into town.

I carry it in a pocket holster when hiking in the back country with my grand kids as it beats reaching for a big stick if a critter becomes a problem.

It is a great little gun, but take a look at the Model 63 before you buy one.

I have had one for a number of years. Funny thing is I ordered it and did not really check on the price in advance. I just wanted one for keeping in my backback on hikes. I will never sell it. They are nice tight little kit guns. Mine has a good double action trigger. Shoots good with just about any 40 grain high speed solid. For a hiker or outdoorsman what a great little gun.

For carry I really like the light ones, though I do not have the one you ask about. I had a 63 from the days of S&W's troubled years and it just wasnt all that good a gun compared to my friends old blued steel model ( wish I could have got that one!) so it went away.
The small, light ones do take more effort to shoot well, in my hands at least.

I had one for a coupla years.  No trouble, nicely made revolver.  Only shot around 900 FPS and wasn't especially accurate.  Nice to carry.  Make a good starter gun for races.  Or scaring people.  Sold it.  I switched to a 4" model 10.  I think I saw one for sale a bit under $500. in the classifieds.

Any of the Ruger or Browning semi .22s would be more accurate & shoot a bit harder.
Vote them all out, EVERY election!

Have one. Like a lot. It goes into my hunting vest when I go afield and into my pocket when I go for a walk in the woods. I've had it for some years and have had no problems. It's as accurate as any other snubbie.

I guess I should mention that after years of carring .22s into the field, which served more for fun plinkin' that game getting and an intent for 'some' protection, my considerations of late have been for something more meaningful than just plinkin'.
Now I usually carry a small .38Spl.

I have the 3" 317. The first thing I didn't like was the sights. I changed them to a serrated ramp front/square notch rear setup. The second problem was the aluminum cylinder. The face kept getting eroded by the blast at the barrel/cylinder gap. On the second trip to the factory for a cylinder replacement, they replaced the aluminum cylinder with a stainless one. It picked up 3.8 oz with the change. I like it!

I wanted one for a while but I didn't want to pay $500.00+ for the ones I saw either.  I found my first one last spring for $350.00, with the 3" bbl, flat black adjustable sights and it turned out to be the pre-lock version. It didn't have the box but it was in very nice condition.  My second came this past October, when I came across one NIB with all paperwork and the other items.  This one was the same as the first one, except for the white outline rear sight and the red insert in the front sight.  The asking price was $425.00.  I haven't shot it yet, but I intend to.  They're neat little revolvers, and the one I've shot seems to be very accurate.  I like them both very much.

l am a J frame nut. l have a bunch and l shoot em. l dont give them much care, l stuff bullets into them, aim, pull the trigger. The guns go BANG and we start over. My 3 inch 317 is great, its lite, as accurate as l am, handles CCI snake loads great and my imperfect eyes can see the sites(Hi Vis front, big V rear). lt weighs next to nothing.  lf you are looking for a. lightweight fun gun l heartedly reccomend it.
