Looking at a Savage Model 14. Anyone shoot one or similar?
« on: September 07, 2010, 04:32:11 PM »
Hi,
Just wondering what the scoop was on these.
I checked the Savage forum below and oddly not much has been said about this model (14 Classic hinged floorplate style).
It has accutrigger, but not accustock, which is fine with me.
It would be in 22-250.
It doesn't seem quite as 'refined' as a Ruger 77 or Rem 700, but they're not to UNrefined either - which is nice.  I've always heard good things about their accuracy and value.
Use would be hunting and paper punching.
Any experiences out there?
Would you buy a new Savage over a used Rem 700 all else being equal?
Thanks!

I have one in 7mm-08.  The wood is very nice or down right beautiful.  It shoots very good at less than one inch 5 shot group @100 yards.  Only thing is the wood is just too nice and has become a safe queen.

Writing for myself only, I would only consider
a new rifle in 22/250, unless I knew, and was buying
from, the original owner.

I have a pair of 250s.
They are a Savage 110c sporter and 112 heavy barrel
single shot. They are about 30 years old, and
both in excellent condition to this day.

I use them mainly for praire dogs and paper punching.
A few coyote and jackrabbits were taken, also.

They still shoot 3 and 5 shot one inch groups respectively.

I have three VLP's, two of which are Mod 12's and one Mod 112, heavy, fluted stainless
barrels. Barrel on the .25-06 is broke in with over a hundred rounds. The other two are
getting there. All were MOA out of the box with the bullet/load combinations they "liked".
With the "liked" loads, last time I went out, the 112 got 5/16", the .243 got 1/4" and the
.22-250 got 3/16" (three-shot groups). I'm a pretty happy camper with the VLP's. Even
though they do come with rough barrels compared to customs, and they are a pain to
clean at first, they're come pretty darned accurate.

Unless I had access to a bore scope, I wouldn't buy any known barrel burner used. A
.22-250 with 500 rounds through it without it ever getting over "warm" at each shooting
session would be fine. However, if someone had it at PD towns where he could shoot
at 500 targets in one day could have destroyed the throat area.
