M 1 Grand
« on: August 16, 2010, 11:01:06 AM »
I have come across an M 1 the guy wants $325.00 for it, the problem is , some time in its life the receiver was cracked, and welded, the crack is back below the rear sight, the rest of the rifle looks good,  is it worth the money, I am thinking it is, the second part, where can I get a replacement receiver, I checked Gun parts, they only list Barrels and other M 1 parts. Or would I have more tied up in this than if I got one that was solid. I want a shooter not a wall hanger. thanks

The CMP will sell you a receiver for $195 plus shipping.

http://www.thecmp.org/m1garand.htm

You might want to compare your total cost (rifle + new receiver + installation) with just getting a complete gun with a good receiver.

Whew!   :o  I got so much to say about your question I don't even know where to start!   :(  And even if I did it would take me days of typing and discussion to get everything out!  Let me just say that it isn't wise to buy ANY Garand (except from the CMP) until you have studied them at length.   ;)

Also, nowadays all Garand parts are highly sought after, and vary greatly in cost depending on a number of things.

There is plenty of information on the Garand on the internet, most of it good, but always consider the source.  You might start with the "Garand Collector's Association," and Fulton Armory.  Google or Bing or... is your friend!   ;D

As a teaser, I have a '43 Springfield with a two-tone receiver... research until you find out why!   :D

Was it cracked and repaired or sawn clear in half and re-welded. Ive heard of de-milled M1s being welded back together. They say a good one is done so well that you cant even see that its been re-welded,but its probably weak and I wouldn't trust it to be safe. If its been sawn in half and you can see it,it takes it out of the category of well done, and its certainly not safe. If it really just cracked,my question would be where did it crack, why did it crack and is it cracked in a part that takes stress during firing. You get into the same issue you get when you clue something that's broken. If it broke becuase you tried to pry it with a screwdriver, stepped on it or otherwise caused it,you are often OK gluing it. If it broke becuase the the part that broke is under stress and after years of use it finally gave up,your probably not OK gluing it. It wasn't strong enough to take the stress to begin with and now its even weaker.

If it cracked becuase it was run over by a jeep, then maybe its ok,if the rest of the gun wasn't damaged. If it cracked becuase the metal was weak there, then you wonder how good the rest of the metal is and how much weaker that part is after being welded.

Edit:  Sorry,I wrote before I read carefully. It seems your already looking to replace that receiver,in essence buying it for parts,so all of what I wrote does not really apply to you.

Thanks for the replies, it sounds like this would be a good one to let go, Gun deals come and go, some good ones and some like this that end up costing you more than they are worth. I heard a rumor a while back that Korea was returning a bunch they have had in storage for years. Anyone else heard this.

I would let that Garand pass myself. If you want a REAL M1 Garand go through the CMP. They are the ones that are getting those M1's from Korea. The best way to get a really good M1 is to go to one of the CMP stores. Camp Perry in Ohio and Anniston Alabama and hand pick your own. Go to the CMP web-site and find out everything you have to do and have before you go or it will be a wasted trip. It is the luck of the draw if you just order one through the CMP. Better hurry because pickings of getting slimmer every day.

Unless you have someone who knows Garands with you to look at it, pass.  It's not worth it.   Just imagine that receiver heel coming off with your chubby little cheek right behind it.

I read this about Korea in a magazine I was thumbing through at Wallie World the other day.  Someone had some dmils for sale that supposedly came from that source.

You might also look around at Rotc's etc.  They have a lot of dmils with the barrel plugged for drilling.  I happened to get lucky on one that way.  Now when I get rich I'm gonna' rebarrel it and make a shooter out of it.  As soon as I get all this white paint off the stock.......... >:(

miltech does welding and remilling to their receiver so i would assume it would be ok to shoot.  With several million of them out there i wouldnt settle for that.  I have a 1941 garand that i bought for 700 and it came with 50 clips, 200 rnds, a bayonet, grenade launcher, dummy grenade, canvas gun pouch.  I think i did good on it too.

Not without knowledge of proper heat treat and knew who welded it. There are enough left to not risk the bolt going through your head!
