I've shot over a dozen deer with my 15" Bullberry .300 Savage Contender barrel. It is a full bull barrel and I wouldn't have it in any lighter profile. Fitted with a 4X Leupold it has taken Kodiak Island deer to 250 yards with 150-grain Ballistic Tips launched at 2400 fps. Most deer were taken at much shorter range - the shortest was about 5 yards!
The cartridge has more than enough power for deer to near 300 yards with this bullet, but the question is how good a field shot are you? I shot 5000+ rounds a year through my T/C barrels in IHMSA competition so I was an accomplished handgun shot. The 250 yard shot was from the creedmore position I used for hundreds of 220-yard rams with numerous barrels. I'd never have taken the shot if I didn't have a solid shooting position.
Factory ammo is almost as powerful but the bullet is harder - I'd limit factory ammo to 175 yards. Chronographed in my barrel, 150-grain Remington ammo showed 2353 fps. In the Encore you can load the .300 hotter than factory ammo, gaining approximately 150 fps. Not much gain, but worthwhile IF you are careful.
