Glock or Springfield XDM?
« on: October 03, 2012, 03:47:28 PM »
I like the grip on the XDM. I like that I can shoot cast (lead) bullets in the XDM, which isn't supposed to be done in the glock unless you replace the stock barrel (from what I hear anyway)...but the glock's reliability is legendary.

Can the XDM handle the "torture test" of sand and dirt that the glock can handle?  I have seen some tests with the XDM, but none were as severe as what I have seen the glock go through. Do I plan on "torturing" mine...no...but if it hit the fan...and were under fire...say you empty your mag and jump for cover with the slide open mind you...and land in the sand...will the XDM be operational when you put in a new mag? I have seen the glock do this. Will the XDM do the same?

That's a lot of what ifs you're worried about.   ;D   I think both are good guns and are very reliable.  I would be more concerned with which one fit my hand best and was easiest for me to shoot accurately including quick accurate follow up shots.

It's good to be prepared but what if scenarios can get pretty silly... what if my (insert gun make/model) gets knocked out of my hand and run over by a tank in -40 weather, during a sleet storm... will it still function properly?  ::)

I  don't think it is a lot of what ifs to be honest. In a combat situation, it is very normal for people to seek cover, especially when a mag is empty. Where I live, clay and sand are both very common. I had a S&W J-frame  357  (my wife's lady smith) lock up once after being dropped in clay, and it didn't even get that dirty. A revolver. I couldn't believe it.

I picked up a used G20. It shoots great. Will have to get a barrel to shot lead. What are the choices.

I like them both but went for the glock because it was just more comfortable to me.  i like the finger grooves they seem to help control the pistol more.  i think you should see which fits you better. i know it wasnt one of your choices but give the M&P a look too.

I love my Glocks (17,32& 35) I shoot IDPA and don't have any problems with them. I shoot them and put them away. I don't clean mine till there has been 1000 rds thru them then they get cleaned. Never had an issue.
Never heard of not being able to shoot cast in the stock barrels, the guys at the range do all the time and they never mentioned changing out the barrels to do so.

Don't really have anything bad to say about either one. I like the feel of the Glock over the XD but that's a subjective thing. Most anyone can learn to shoot any pistol platform well if they want. The simplicity of design makes the pistol easy to modify if that's on your list. Not to mention the abundance of reasonably priced aftermarket parts available.  My vote is for the Glock.

Edit: Glock says "No Lead" in their barrels. I have several aftermarket barrels for Glocks. This last year I have been using the stock barrel in my mdl 35 shooting my lead reloads in matches. I normally shoot between 100-200rds in a match with minimal leading, as do several other shooters. I'm not necessarially condoning the practice, just saying it hasn't been a problem. FWIW

Lee,
I don't think you will go wrong with either. Make me choose and I'll say Glock. BUT the 5.25 XD is damn appealing.... ::)  I have a good friend that was hung up on "no manual safety"of the glock. (Dispite the safety record and shooting mine)So he went with the XD.

Tom,
LOVE me G20!  Barrels are avalible form Storm lake, Lone Wolf, Bar stoe and KKM. Maybe a few others, but these are the big players. Of them I like KKM, they are mid priced in this group, AMERICAM MADE!! They are also very well finished and shoot well. I also have a couple Lone Wolf barrels and these have proven just fine as well.

I am attracted to the glock because of its reliability, but have concerns about lead bullets. Haven't held it yet.

The XDM feels great to me. Fits my handl like a glove. I can shoot lead in it too. I just don't know if it is reliable as the glock.

The M&P didn't fit me. I have seen some tests with it, but none that would make me personally consider it over a glock since it already didn't fit my hand as well as the XDM. It may be a better gun than the XDM, but since I don't know that yet...and given the XDM fit better, I would choose the XDM over the M&P at this given point in time.

Both are great guns. I have and shoot both in different models. My nod goes to the XDM duo-tone. Glock shoot but the XDM I think may have the edge in the accuracy department.  ;)

Look for a new gun review on the Hunters Hut for the new XDS snigle stack .45 ACP. AWSOME.

Hi Lee,

it appears your decision comes down to the item you put more weight on,  reliability or  fit.   To me the Glock is the most reliable hand gun.  In my decision I went with reliability.  Which is why I have a G20 and G21.  The G20 is my backup hunting hand gun and the 21 is my goto SHTF gun.  There are other reason I went with the G21 such as magazine capacity, price compared to HK USP Tactical.

I voted for the Glunks.
I will never own one, however.
The XDM has some things that are superior to the Glunks but if I were---it aint gonna happen folks--to buy this platform it would be a glunk.
Coe to think of it I have sevral that are first cousins to the glunk---Sigs and Walthers--but you can cock these guns and the platform is more refined.
Blessings

There are a bunch of torture tests out there on the XDs. Here's one http://arsenal.mojo4m.com/1852/ You can also check on youtube for them.
At work I carry a glock 23 and 27. It feels better in the hand and is more accurate for me. I have no issue with the glocks mechanically. When they decided on them at work the glock reps dropped one from 360 ft off the tallest building. It broke the front sight and scarred the slide a bit. It was rigged up and fired afterwards, then rapid fire by hand without issue. We haven't had any ftf, misfires or anything of that nature. I just don't care for the grip of the 19/23. They don't do real good in big hands. The glock trigger is a little cleaner and lighter than the standard xd trigger. There are more aftermarket parts supporting the glocks such as 22 conversions to get a fellow more practiced and accurate with one. So it just boils down to personal taste. If you plan to stay stock then the xd or xdm may be ok. If you want to customize on the glock may be a better option if it will fit your paws right.

The Glocks fit me best. I have a 22 and 23. I shot a friend's XD in 45, nice gun, accurate. I liked the Glock triggers better, but liked the grip safety on the XD. It was the first time I shot anything in 45, and my friend kept telling me the recoil on the 45 is so much "easier" than a 40. Felt about the same to me.
