I found the problem with the 243cal. barrel
« on: September 19, 2010, 11:53:23 AM »

I shot this group to day from the bench at 75 yards
I was at the range yesterday had the scope on 9 power through the range session and after 20 rounds I was happy a pig in S--t man the gun can shoot.I then cleaned the bore set the scope on 5x power and the point of aim was 5" high man what gives here I fired a few more shots and she returned to dead center o.k. still happy
I got home a cleaned the bore really good had time to kill so I went to the range again and first shot not even on the top of the paper target ,I fired another shot and now high on paper the tried shot dead center.I wen threw the range session and fired about 25 rounds letting the barrel cool each 4 to 5 shots.I only patched the bore to remove copper fouling and powder with a DRY CLOTH patch never did I use any solvent.
I should of remembered I had a barrel some time back that shot outstanding as long as it was not cleaned
I tested W760 and IMR 4350 both on the low mid range or middle of the chart all shots fired today were inside a 1/2" group so it barrel dirty on the H@r handi until the hunting season is over.

Most all guns shoot better with a fouled barrel.
As said, some only take a couple rounds to settle back in while other will take several.
Leave it dirty until after hunting season, clean it good before storage and next year just fire how ever many it takes to get it dirty again and you will be good to go!

Anybody tried SmoothKote?  Fill up all those handi irregularites with moly and then just leave it alone as far a cleaning goes until spring comes?  Maybe an alternative to shooting those extra rounds.  Just a thought.
