10" vs. 12" 44 mag barrel...What is the differences, etc.?
« on: September 23, 2010, 05:03:02 PM »
If you could help me out here I would appreciate it.  I want a 44 mag barrel for general close in hunting.  I would like it where I could carry it around so I'd like it to be a 10" or 12".  If it's a 12" I'd consider a hunter style as well.  What is the velocity differences in the 2 barrel lengths?  Any Pro's or Con's of the 2 sizes?  Your input would be appreciated.  What is considered the "range" of a 44 in those barrel lengths?  I have a couple of JDJ's for long range work but they are 14" barrels and not so fun to lug around all day.

Thanks.

Bob

IMO ::)   I would go with a 10''

I have a 12'' hunter barrel & it feels just as big as a 14''

I don't know why but, the 10 inch is what I like.  The animal will not know the difference in velocity.

I have a 10" in 44 mag and one in 357 herret and love them both.  I think the 10 is just the right length.  Remember that with the sealed breach, you don't lose pressure like the cylinder gap in a revolver.  The difference in length would maybe make 100 feet per second difference.  Dale
