Mili-tech grease & breachplug, A BIG thumbs down
« on: December 10, 2003, 02:01:33 PM »
Two days ago I had a few friends up and did a little range testing at my place. I had just received a package of the No Excuses 460 gr. lunkers in .45 caliber. So I decided to throw a few down range at a piece of paper to see what loads to use. It was very cold and I wasn't really into it so I stopped after about 4 or 5 shots.

Anyway, I had gotten one of those sample packs from Mili-tech.  So I decided to try it on the breach plug of my Encore. I snugged the plug down as I have in the past with Bore butter and copper anti sieze. To my surprise and dismay. After only 4 or 5 shots, the plug was VERY tight in comparison to the other products used and was even gritty and cruncy for the first 6 plus revolutions on extraction. The entire length of the threaded part of the plug had fouling on it. Which is something that never happened with the other products.

Mili-tech may be a good product for lubing the slide and moving parts on one of my auto pistols or rifles. Or maybe all the other moving parts of my Encore. But IMO, it's not the right product for and doesn't withstand the heat or pressures of a muzzleloader breach plug, and won't see use in mine again. If I get some time in the near future. I may do a comparison melt down test on a few different products to see at what temperatures  they start to disolve and burn.

Just my observation and wooden nickles worth.
Your milage with this product may vary.

After six shots through my new Van Horn 45 caliber, my breech plug froze and is still frozen.  The Mile-Tech did not help at all.  I know others have had the same problem with other agents, and Mile-Tech may not be the problem, but it sure did not work for me.  I will work on it after Ohio's muzzleloader season.

I think the troubles is not with the mil-tec but in the way it was used. I use just plain old bearchwood casey choke tube lube and after about 20-30 rounds the breach plug is tight but not frozen in place I just use a socket and a nice wrinch  it comes right on out. If you heat the barrel up some and cool the breach plug some it will come right out

What all can be used for lube that is commonly available? Can I get some from autozone or a place like that? I have nobody that carries BP stuff but WM and they are out of most everything. I'm wanting to shoot today as I just got one yesterday but don't want the plug frozen up.

Cane,
I went to a local auto-parts dealer and purchased a tube of anti-seize "Versa-Chem Type 13" copper filled lubricant.  This is Hi-temp (2000 deg.) copper formulation.  I've used it for shotgun chokes and muzzle-loader breech-plug.  I've never had problems with my 1-48 twist Traditions side-hammer breech plug (never jammed to-date or had a large crud build-up like the Encores).

Any anti sieze by copperplate/loctite/permatex will do the job. It is important to get it in all the threads right to the breach end of the plug. Otherwise fouling starts to work its way back into the threads gumming things up and making removal difficult.

I'm agreeing with the Omega and Savage T on this. The copper anti sieze is the best to use and is redily available. Although there is also nickle antiseize that is rated to about 2800 degrees but is not really needed.

Enjoy your new toy.
