Problems with my Moison Nagant M91/30
« on: September 29, 2010, 04:48:26 AM »
I have several of the Moison M91/30 rifles and for the most part they are fun to shoot and very easy to work on. Unfortunatly I have not been so lucky with my latest acquisition. When I fire the gun I have one heck of a time trying to get the shell casing to eject. I have to really hammer on the bolt to get it open.

Once it does open, the ejected casing has deep scratch`s all around it which I believe could not be made by the ejector paw. It seems to me that the scratch`s are being caused by the throat of the chamber.

I used a bore light but could not see or feel any burrs or rough edges. I`m stumped as to what is causing the problem. Perhaps this rifle is better off being used as a 79 dollar hat rack.

Any ideas or thoughtful advice would be much appreciated.

I would say the previous owner probably fired a batch of the coated ammo in it.  This stuff is like clear paint of some sort on the cases.  It transfers to the chamber and causes the extraction problems like you have.  I would try a good chamber cleaning with a brush and something like nail polish remover and see if that doesn't fix the problem.  Larry

I never thought of that, but it does makes sense. I will give it a good cleaning and try it again. Thank you Larry.

The cheapest band of carb leaner from WalMart is ideal for this. It is less than a buck a can and the acetone can be directed exactly where its wanted by the included straw.. Keep stron solvents such as these away from stock finishes or plastic components..including screwdriver handles..

I'd recommend using a shotgun bore brush - 20 ga, and chucking it in your drill.  Spray some solvent in the chamber, then hit it with the brush in the drill.  Repeat as needed.  Frequently these rifles have old dried cosmoline and/or other gunk in the chamber, which causes this problem.

I kinda doubt you could get a Mosin barrel hot enough to melt the lacquer coating on some ammo; I could be wrong, though.
