Attack turkeys...
« on: August 17, 2010, 02:35:05 PM »
I've got some feeders out, and the turkeys are more interested than  the deer.  My 8 yr. old grandson just can't grasp the idea of seasons to hunt, and is aggravated we can't hunt now.  Yesterday he "went missing", which meant he had gone to the woods.  With him he took his toy compound bow and some field points.

When he came home, he was white as a ghost and all in a lather from running.  I finally got the story out of him.  He tried to "injun" up on some turkey down by the feeder, and an old gobbler got after HIM!  I guess when you weigh 60 pounds a bird that big running at you is kinda' traumatic to say the least.   ;D

I asked him why he didn't shoot in self defense?  He said he forgot... ;D

that is funny!reminds me of when my now 14 yr old sone was about 7 or so.he wanted a BIG gun so bad he couldnt stand it, didnt understand why he had to conduct his hunts with a anemic little bb gun in the barnyard.i finally told him when he killed a rabbit or squirrel with his bb gun then he wud be a big boy and get a bigger gun. he snuk around like elmer fudd. ummm bout the next weekend he came draggin in a fresh rabbit. when i asked him how he got it, he said i wounded it and tracked it up under the hay baler and finished it off.he has been a hunting machine ever since!

That brings back an old memory on me!  I grew up on a farm in Iowa and we had a huge white rooster that used to chase me around when ever I went outside.  Now I was only about 3 or 4 and the thing was as tall as I was.  One day the darn thing was chasing me and I had a stick in my hand and I broke his neck.  Drug that bugger up to the porch and hollered for mom, was worried I was in trouble.  No problem, folks knew how bad the rooster chased me around, so we had a big ol' pot of chicken noodle soup on that boys behalf.  DP

Ah the wonders of the wild seen through young eyes!  Remember the time when things were new and adventure abounded...   I'd like to recapture that age in the company of my younger generations.  :-\   I've got 4 grandsons ranging from 2 and a half to 8.  The trouble is getting them, me and the woods all in the same place at the same time!   :D

I've already taken the 8 YO to the range once and he really enjoyed it.  He watched me reload a few rounds before hand also, and was interested!

Alas, he lives with my eldest daughter in Beaufort, SC...  :(  But I've got plans for him and that H&R 45 Colt BC I just bought!   ;D

My 10 yr old grandson got his birthday present in July-a Handi rifle in 45 Colt.  It has a pallet wood youth stock and a 4X32 scope, so he can use it and not worry about a few dings in the wood.  I loaded up a hundred rounds for him to practice with, really low powered stuff so he wouldn't get banged up by recoil.  I figure I'll sight it in for him with heavier loads for the Bambi slaying season.  He won't feel recoil with a deer in the scope.  The colt is a great round for kids.  The big shiny case looks impressive, the bang is satisfactory, and recoil is modest.  And a 0.452'' dia, the slug is starting out where a 357 mag hopes to get when it expands.  I hope to be with him when he gets his first deer.  I am on a lease in Chester, SC, hope to take him down a few trips this year.
