Pay to play
« on: October 06, 2010, 02:21:33 PM »

In this months Pa outdoor news on the front page there is an article about a proposal to charge for the use of State game land ranges, The ideas flouting is if you buy a hunting license you would not need to pay, but the non-hunting shooters would need to buy a $30.00 access pass. This seems fare in light of the cost of maintaining these ranges, but then I do not use them. What are your thoughts on this perposel?

That's the way they do it here in Bama tho the limited permit thing required if you don't have a hunting license is not that much. Heck our hunting license isn't that much I don't think. Of course being an old fart I don't need either just my driver's license to hunt or shoot at the ranges.

I think it is a good idea. Many small clubs charge that much or more to be a member. I would think that most of the shooters are hunters anyway, and the few that are not should pull their own weight. Money is tight, there will be no more free rides. Shotgunner

I'm all for the fee but I'd like to see more ranges opened up on the SGLs too. One was closed near by and the neighboring county has none.

I would have no problem paying a reasonable fee or asking someone else to, however locally our range is "managed" by DNR on Corp of Engineers property.  There is no rangemaster, no supervision, no upkeep of the range and it's assets.  Guys who use it make repairs and cleanup.

The DNR will occasionally show up in the middle of a shoot looking for some reason to write a ticket, ie, wrong target stand, target too close, wrong type of target, etc.
